Federal prosecutors allege former Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier<\/a> accepted roughly $100,000 from a sports gambler to leave an NBA game early during the 2022-23 season.<\/p>\n

According to a superseding indictment<\/a> filed Thursday in Brooklyn federal court, prosecutors claim Rozier worked with a gambling group connected to Marves Fairley to help bettors profit from nonpublic information, TheAthletic reports.<\/p>\n

The indictment alleges Rozier planned to exit the Hornets\u2019 March 23, 2023 game against the New Orleans Pelicans during the first quarter while using a lower leg injury as cover. Prosecutors said Rozier told friend Deniro Laster about the plan before Laster allegedly passed the information along to gamblers.<\/p>\n

Fairley pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts tied to the investigation and admitted in court that he paid an NBA player to impact performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agreed to pay a player to change their game performance,\u201d Fairley said.<\/p>\n

A federal prosecutor later identified Rozier as that player.<\/p>\n

Rozier\u2019s Attorney Pushes Back<\/p>\n

Rozier\u2019s attorney, Jim Trusty, denied the allegations and criticized cooperating witnesses tied to the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some desperate men in this case with terrible criminal records and tons of exposure,\u201d Trusty said.<\/p>\n

Rozier previously pleaded not guilty to the original charges filed in October.<\/p>\n

The updated indictment adds two new felony counts after a grand jury approved the filing Thursday. Prosecutors now accuse Rozier of sports bribery and honest services fraud in addition to two existing wire fraud charges.<\/p>\n
