Utah Jazz fans are some of the most loyal and passionate in the NBA. They, however, have established a reputation for sometimes crossing the line in their behavior, creating a hostile and intimidating atmosphere that has caused concern among opposing teams and players.

Not a few players have spoken out about their not-so-pleasant experience playing in front of the fan base in Salt Lake, including being on the receiving end of abusive heckling and racial slurs, which tested their patience and resolve in focusing solely on the game.

Among them was four-time NBA champion and one-time Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, who opened up about how, as an athlete of color, he was never really comfortable playing in front of a predominantly white crowd in Utah.

Uncomfortable moments from the Jazz fans

Iguodala spoke about the feeling in his 2019 memoir, “The Sixth Man,” which he co-authored with Carvell Wallace. Using one road game while he was still playing for the Golden State Warriors as a backdrop, Iguodala shared that he was not too fond of playing the Jazz on the road because of the discomfort he felt from the energy coming from the stands.

“Salt Lake City has always had a certain effect on me as a player. I always feel – I don’t know how else to say it – blacker when I’m in Utah. Something very uncomfortable is triggered in me when I play in front of that crowd. Not necessarily because they were any worse than any other crowd (though they were passionate),” Iggy wrote.

The discomfort that Iguodala felt was further validated by several instances involving verbal altercations between black players and overzealous fans.

One instance took place in the 2019 playoffs when a Jazz fan was banned after hurling racially derogatory words at Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook. The All-Star guard did not take the fan’s action to heart, as he also had strong words to say back, for which he was later fined by the NBA.

Another incident occurred in the 2021 playoffs involving Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant‘s family, who received explicit, inappropriate comments, leading to several fans being ejected and banned from attending Jazz games.

Jazz addressing concerns

Utah organization, however, has, through the years, been making efforts to address concerns raised by various athletes, such as Iguodala, about fan decorum at their homecourt.

Apart from handing down ejections and bans to those overstepping boundaries, the Jazz are also encouraging fans to police their ranks, report disrespectful supporters and assist in investigating incidents.

Management has also constantly reminded Utah fans of their responsibilities when they come to the arena, particularly how to treat all players and fellow fans with respect.

“Racism and hate speech hurts us all, and this is not the first time something like this has happened in our arena. The Utah that I have come to love is welcoming and inclusive,” former Jazz player Donovan Mitchell once reminded the team’s fan base.

Fan support is a huge part of what makes the NBA the league that it is. But when boundaries are crossed, they should not be cast aside; appropriate action must be taken to allow players to do their thing without fear or apprehension.
