The Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> have settled on a replacement<\/a> for former executive Daryl Morey with the hiring of former NBA player Jameer Nelson<\/a> as the organization\u2019s new vice president of basketball operations, as per Shams Charania of ESPN. Nelson has been a part of the 76ers\u2019 front office for some time now, recently serving as the team\u2019s assistant general manager.<\/p>\n

In addition to Jameer Nelson\u2019s new role, as part of the ongoing front office reorganization Elton Brand<\/a> will not return<\/a> as the 76ers\u2019 general manager. Assistant general manager Prosper Karangwa will remain with the franchise, however, by virtue of a new contract extension. Nelson\u2019s promotion follows the 76ers\u2019 hiring of Mike Gansey for their top executive position<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the 76ers\u2019 deciding to part ways with Morey, Nelson was viewed as a heavy favorite to be promoted<\/a>, as per ClutchPoints\u2019 NBA insider Brett Siegel. Since retiring from the NBA, the former first-round pick has been working within the 76ers organization.<\/p>\n

He was initially hired as the assistant general manager of the team\u2019s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, in 2020. He then was promoted to assistant general manager of the 76ers in 2025. His last season in the NBA was the 2017-18 season when he suited up in 50 games between the New Orleans Pelicans<\/a> and the Detroit Pistons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The No. 20 overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, Nelson\u2019s career spanned 14 seasons. In addition to the Pelicans and Pistons, Nelson also played for the Orlando Magic<\/a>, Dallas Mavericks<\/a>, Boston Celtics<\/a> and Denver Nuggets<\/a>.
