Ja\u2019Kobe Tharp of Auburn broke a world record that had stood for more than 13 years when he ran 12.75 seconds in the men\u2019s 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA outdoor track and field championship meet Wednesday at the University of Oregon.<\/p>\n
Tharp broke the record held by Aries Merritt, an American who ran a 12.80 in September 2012. Tharp\u2019s record came in one of three 110 hurdles semifinals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.<\/p>\n
Entering Wednesday\u2019s meet, the collegiate and NCAA championship record for the 110 hurdles was 12.98, set by Grant Holloway of Florida in 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwelve seventy-five? I have more in my legs. I have no words. I\u2019m speechless,\u201d Tharp said on the ESPN broadcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tharp, who won the 110 hurdles at last year\u2019s NCAA championships and was runner-up in 2024, entered with a season-best time of 13.05. His time Wednesday was 0.27 seconds quicker than the second-fastest qualifier for Friday\u2019s 110 hurdles final.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was not a picture-perfect race. I\u2019m truly at a loss for words,\u201d said Tharp, who has his sights set on the final and defending his 2025 title.<\/p>\n \u201cThis was all about getting through, surviving and advancing,\u201d the junior added.<\/p>\n Tharp\u2019s winning time at the 2025 NCAA meet was 13.05. He won the USATF championship last season in a lifetime best of 13.01.<\/p>\n According to the ESPN broadcast, Tharp is the first track and field athlete to set a world record at the NCAA championship meet since high jumper Dwight Stones cleared 7 feet, 7 inches at the 1976 NCAAs.<\/p>\n The four-day NCAA meet opened Wednesday as scheduled, a day after a bomb threat<\/a> prompted the evacuation of Hayward Field. Athletes who were practicing at Hayward were forced to leave the stadium, but police gave the all-clear less than three hours later.<\/p>\n The meet continues Thursday, a day consisting largely of women\u2019s preliminaries, followed by men\u2019s finals Friday and women\u2019s finals Saturday.
