(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>1931: Chicago Outfit leader Al Capone was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-indict-capone-5000-cou\/199376246\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicted on 5,000 counts<\/a> \u2014 4,000 of them were transportation of beer trucks loaded with 32 barrels each. An investigation led by Prohibition agent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2014\/01\/31\/eliot-ness-man-wasnt-as-untouchable-as-the-hollywood-legend-3\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eliot Ness<\/a> estimated Capone and 68 of his associates earned $200 million during a decade-long illegal \u201cbeer combine\u201d that brewed, packaged and delivered the contraband throughout the Loop.<\/p>\n<p>The charges came one week after Capone was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-capone-indicted-by-us\/199376807\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicted on tax evasion charges<\/a>, and surrendered to police.<\/p>\n<p>Capone was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-us-jury-convicts-al-ca\/171557153\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-us-jury-convicts-al-ca\/171557153\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found guilty<\/a> in October 1931 by a federal jury on five counts of income tax indictments and was later <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-al-capone-sentenced-to-1\/171557475\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:sentenced;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-al-capone-sentenced-to-1\/171557475\/\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to 11 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>Capone was\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-capone-speeds-to-atlanta\/171557782\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:transferred by train;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-capone-speeds-to-atlanta\/171557782\/\">transferred by train<\/a>\u00a0in May 1932 to a federal penitentiary in Atlanta. (James Mayo\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" class=\"icon-enlarge mng-gallery-fullscreen-expand\" aria-label=\"Expand fullscreen slideshow\">Expand<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1966: In <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagostudies.uchicago.edu\/humboldt-park\/humboldt-park-history-humboldt-park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humboldt Park<\/a>, white Chicago police Officer Thomas Munyon shot Arcelis Cruz, a young Puerto Rican man, in the leg. The incident ignited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/06\/11\/flashback-unrest-on-division-street-a-1966-police-shooting-was-a-tipping-point-for-puerto-rican-chicagoans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two days of rioting<\/a> along Division Street that sprang from deep frustrations over bad police relations, poor schools and uncaring landlords.<\/p>\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-burn-cops-cars-35-held\/174292377\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first day of<\/a> unrest, the Tribune reported, three squad cars were burned, 35 people were arrested and 19 people were injured. Stores along Division Street were looted and set on fire. A firebomb was thrown into Schley Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/06\/11\/flashback-unrest-on-division-street-a-1966-police-shooting-was-a-tipping-point-for-puerto-rican-chicagoans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flashback: Unrest on Division Street: A 1966 police shooting was a tipping point for Puerto Rican Chicagoans.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters had a hose wrested from their hands as they tried to extinguish the flames of a burning police car. A Tribune photographer was robbed of his camera, beaten and kicked, until neighborhood residents rescued him.
