\u201cYou either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those are the immortal words of Harvey Dent, Two-Face, from Christopher Nolan\u2019s epic The Dark Knight. I watched The Odyssey; I witnessed the pasty vampire from Twilight (also Bruce Wayne in The Batman, ironically) overcome his tragic microbangs to attempt the murder of Spider-Man, and now I, too, have fallen prey to the spreading epidemic of Nolan Fever.<\/p>\n
And with both the Utah Jazz and that legendary director\u2019s works wrestling one another in a turf war for my headspace, it seems natural to draw similarities between the dichotomous performances of Utah rookie Darryn Peterson and the human embodiment of the duality of man.<\/p>\n
Two-Face began his life as a righteous man, pursuing justice in the name of truth and standing as a beacon of hope in a city starved of optimism. Darryn Peterson opened the book on his NBA career with two transcendent performances, sending shockwaves throughout the gridded streets of Salt Lake City that sparked life in a basketball fanbase void of expectations.<\/p>\n
It seems natural to draw similarities between the dichotomous performances of Utah rookie Darryn Peterson and the human embodiment of the duality of man.<\/p>\n
But a life-altering transition changed the fate of both protagonists, twisting their resolves into a form unrecognizable to those who witness, but technically comparable at their core. For Dent, it was a horrific accident that stole the life of the woman he loved and stained his appearance with a grotesque and permanent reminder of that fateful night. For Peterson, it was crossing the border shared between Utah and Nevada, stepping into Sin City and losing the symphonic scoring touch that compels poets to lyricize and artists to dream.<\/p>\n
Dent pursued justice, but allowed the cold, rigid caress of chance to determine the extent of wrongdoers\u2019 restitution. Peterson continued to gather 20-point evenings in Las Vegas, but the method in which he did so traded strings in a quartet for nails on a chalkboard.<\/p>\n
Where once existed beauty and truth, now spawns tragedy and heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Converting over 50% of his looks from the field, while putting on a showcase of playmaking prowess the likes of which had gone unseen during his freshman season in Kansas. Clearly the best player on the court in both games, Peterson appeared as a mirror image of prime Kobe Bryant, setting the Delta Center block ablaze.<\/p>\n
Never before had a more obvious superstar donned a Utah Jazz uniform fresh from the draft \u2014 Utah had found their deliverer.<\/p>\n
But then something happened.<\/p>\n

At his core, this was the same Darryn Peterson. He attempted tough shots, he was a plus defender out on the perimeter, and he showed playmaking ability that had been locked away in his pre-draft evaluations.<\/p>\n
But he wasn\u2019t making his shots anymore. With jumpers repeatedly glancing off the front of the cylinder, well short of their target, the increased degree of difficulty stopped being fun \u2014 it was a menace. Making impossible and uncomfortable shots has been Peterson\u2019s M.O. for years, but a stretch like this left viewers wondering if he had become overreliant on poor shot selection.<\/p>\n
Tough defense \u2014 *cough* fouling *cough* \u2014 led to turnovers, and he had seemingly left his confidence back in Utah, whiffing on wide-open gifts at the rim and struggling to find a shred of consistency. The papier-mache dissolved when it met San Antonio\u2019s river walk, limiting Peterson to fewer than 20 points for the first time in the Summer League, and reminding the world that Kobe wasn\u2019t an unstoppable force from day one; Peterson will have to start from ground zero, just like everyone else.<\/p>\n
This city needs a hero, not a symbol.<\/p>\n
Dent died a villain \u2014 the very thing he worked his whole life to eliminate. And though the citizens of Gotham lived on in ignorance of his misdeeds, he is a symbol of unrealized potential. A man whose ideals will now be remembered by what should have been, rather than what truly came to be. The city crumbled with his lie.<\/p>\n
Let us hope that the death of Summer League Darryn Peterson can bring forth new life in the form of a franchise savior for the Utah Jazz. A superstar the organization has longed for \u2014 the man who can finally deliver the Utah Jazz to the promised land.<\/p>\n
This city needs a hero, not a symbol. And I believe in Darryn Peterson.<\/p>\n
