Silver would continue on to say that front offices are now, more than ever, “going to need to make mixed basketball and business decisions\u201d to adhere to the CBA’s principles, something we’ve seen in the form of Boston’s shock trade of Jaylen Brown earlier this offseason.<\/p>\n
Heck, even the Thunder have been forced to adjust their strategies in an effort to avoid harsh, dynasty-preventing tax penalties, as Sam Presti and company have been hard at work chipping away at the club’s payroll this summer in order to duck under the dreaded second apron threshold.<\/p>\n
Yet, despite Silver’s publicly alluded to intentions, Oklahoma City still seems primed to become the long-standing “It team” of the NBA.<\/p>\n
Thunder masterfully navigating around new CBA restrictions<\/p>\n
Coming into the offseason, the Thunder were beelining their way toward an incredibly expensive 2026-27 campaign where they would be residing within the second apron and, in turn, be handicapped by all the restrictions and penalties that come with entering into such a threshold.<\/p>\n
With this, many were concerned about whether they’d be able to properly navigate the CBA’s constraints and, in turn, freely hold onto the majority of their championship-tested core moving forward.<\/p>\n
Within just a few short weeks, it seems Oklahoma City has sorted everything out.<\/p>\n
Yes, to do so, Presti was forced to make a few sad-to-see decisions, most notably the recent trade that shipped beloved veteran Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks.<\/p>\n
However, every move that’s been made over the past month and change has had an already installed back-up plan in place (ex., Cason Wallace now filling in as the future of the two guard position), and has resulted in the shedding of $317 million from their payroll and luxury tax penalties.<\/p>\n
Most importantly, they’re officially underneath the second apron as a result.<\/p>\n
Now, not only do they have their star trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams locked in for the long haul, but they also boast the financial flexibility necessary to secure the futures of several other promising young studs<\/a> like Wallace and Ajay Mitchell.<\/p>\n Add all of this to the fact that they just brought on two highly touted young prospects in the first round of last month’s draft, and only added to their elite treasure trove of future draft capital <\/a>this summer, and it seems that the Thunder are as equipped as any team could possibly be to thwart Adam Silver’s plans of halting the creation of the game’s next great dynasty.<\/p>\n
