While the top headlines from the 2026 offseason revolve around which superstars moved to new teams, one underrated and costly retention will prove to be equally consequential: Donovan Mitchell<\/a>\u2018s new deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.<\/p>\n

Mitchell signed a four-year, $273 million extension with the Cavaliers. As part of the extension, Mitchell gets a player option at the end of it plus a 15% trade kicker, according to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Cleveland, the contract remains a hefty price to pay for Mitchell. And yes, the dynamic guard is worth the cost of admission at times.<\/p>\n

That said, a financial commitment of this magnitude will be devastating for the Cavaliers\u2019 ability to contend right now and stay relevant in the future.<\/p>\n

The Donovan Mitchell Bill Is Quite Costly for Cleveland Cavs<\/p>\n

Donovan Mitchell\u2019s new deal hurts the Cleveland Cavaliers in more ways than one. First, the big\u00a0reason is how much Mitchell is owed every season.<\/p>\n

Mitchell\u2019s extension adds at least three years of new money and four if he accepts the player option in 2030-31. In each of those years, his contract will severely eat into Cleveland\u2019s cap space.<\/p>\n

The average annual salary for each of the four years is over $68 million. As Mitchell gets older, his contract becomes even more costly for Cleveland, according to estimates from Spotrac<\/a>:<\/p>\n

2027-28: $60.9 million (35% of league cap)
\n2028-29: $65.8 million (36% of league cap)
\n2029-30: $70.7 million (36.83% of league cap)
\n2030-31 (player option): $75.5 million (37.49% of league cap)<\/p>\n

In other words, over a third of Cleveland\u2019s cap space is now tied to Mitchell. That will make it extra difficult for Cavs\u2019 ownership and management to sign free agents, execute trades, or stay below any of the aprons.<\/p>\n

Outside the financial concern, age is also a factor.<\/p>\n

Donovan Mitchell’s reported 4-year, $272.8M extension with the #Cavaliers<\/a> projects to break down as:<\/p>\n

27-28: $60.9M
28-29: $65.7M
29-30: $70.6M
30-31: $75.5M (player)<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old has now locked in over $511M of on-court earnings.<\/p>\n

Mitchell will be entering his age-30 season in 2026-27. The new extension kicks in for his age-31 campaign.<\/p>\n

Mitchell is coming off arguably the best two years of his career. During that span, he\u2019s averaged<\/a> 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game. He remains quite efficient, with shooting splits of 46% from the field, 37% from deep, and 85% from the charity stripe. He\u2019s been top-10 in MVP voting in three of the last four years and has been All-NBA second team or better across the last two seasons.<\/p>\n

But small guards tend to age quicker. Their production tends to tail off faster. Stephen Curry<\/a> and Chris Paul<\/a> are the exceptions for superstar guards, not the rule. This is especially concerning as the league trends toward bigger, more physical players.<\/p>\n

Both in terms of overall cost and general risk of Mitchell\u2019s prime ending sooner, Cleveland might also find it quite tough to trade him for positive value, should it need to. The 15% trade kicker only adds another layer of complication for any potential move.<\/p>\n

The Mitchell-Mobley Duo Will Cost Cleveland $121 Million Per Year<\/p>\n

The Donovan Mitchell extension marks the second major, long-term commitment on the Cleveland Cavaliers\u2019 roster. There\u2019s also Evan Mobley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mobley\u2019s current deal<\/a> goes through the 2029-30 season. It will pay him an average annual salary of $53.8 million.<\/p>\n

Like Mitchell, the remaining four years of his five-year, $269 million contract tie up a massive chunk of Cleveland\u2019s cap space:<\/p>\n

2026-27: $50.1 million (30.37% of league cap)
\n2027-28: $53.8 million (30.92% of league cap)
\n2028-29: $57.5 million (31.48% of league cap)
\n2029-30: $61.2 million (31.92% of league cap)<\/p>\n

In an average year, the Mitchell-Mobley combo will cost the Cavs $121 million each season between 2026-27 and 2029-30. Roughly speaking, that\u2019s over 65% of Cleveland\u2019s cap space every year for the next four years.<\/p>\n

Teams where Mitchell is the best player tend to have a clear ceiling in the playoffs. The Utah Jazz never<\/a> reached the Western Conference Finals with Mitchell as the best player. Cleveland just narrowly got there with Mitchell, who has sneakily broken down the longer his teams stay in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

If Mobley takes a step forward as a star, the Mitchell extension becomes way more defensible for Cleveland. If the Cavaliers are relying on Mitchell to be the leading man on a contender, that becomes way more of a risk that, so far, has just never happened.<\/p>\n

Cleveland May Be Mistaking a Conference Finals Run for Real Progress<\/p>\n

In defense of Cleveland, the franchise continues to have its best stretch since LeBron James<\/a> left after 2018<\/a>. Currently, the Mitchell-Mobley duo remains one of the best guard-big man combos in the league.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That said, it appears the Cavs are mistaking their most recent trip<\/a> to the Eastern Conference Finals, their first since 2018, as upward progression.<\/p>\n

Cleveland faced an injury-riddled<\/a> Toronto Raptors, and still almost lost the series. It went to seven games. Against a team filled with playoff roster flaws in the Detroit Pistons, it again narrowly escaped in Game 7.<\/p>\n

In the ECF against the New York Knicks, Cleveland not only got swept. It was dominated, losing every game by double figures, including a 37-point defeat in Game 4.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the Mitchell extension will hamstring the Cavaliers\u2019 ability to put supporting pieces around their two stars. Committing to an aging guard who, on paper, will soon be exiting his basketball prime comes with immense risk and little upside.<\/p>\n

And yes, Mitchell technically helped the Cavs by signing this new deal now. Had he waited, Mitchell could\u2019ve gotten<\/a> an extra year and $80 million on an extension. But that\u2019s a small concession for what is an astronomical deal.<\/p>\n

Unless Donovan Mitchell proves he can be \u201cthe guy,\u201d the Cleveland Cavaliers will be paying quite the price for years to come.<\/p>\n
