The main course of the Miami Heat offseason is over, even though there\u2019s still work to be done.<\/p>\n
However, it will be one that we will never forget.<\/p>\n
Headlined by acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, where does this offseason rank in Heat history? Let\u2019s examine a few of the best!<\/p>\n
Honorable mention: 2019 offseason<\/p>\n
Skinny: Jimmy Butler saved the Miami Heat from perpetual mediocrity.<\/p>\n
Butler agreed to a four-year, $142 million deal with Miami back in 2019. They almost acquired him in the previous summer, but then-Timberwolves head coach and executive Tom Thibodeau repo<\/a>r<\/a>tedly wanted <\/a>Bam Adebayo. Imagine how disastrous that would have been.<\/p>\n Anyway, the Heat landed their white whale nine months later \u2014 though it took four teams to complete the sign-and-trade (MIA did not have any cap space). While they did not win a title, Butler elevated the Heat to unforeseen heights \u2014 namely two NBA Finals and three conference Finals appearances. Those finals squads in 2020 and 2023 were Nos. 5 and 8 seeds, respectively.<\/p>\n The six-time All-Star averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.7 steals with Miami and cemented himself as a top-3 player in Heat history, despite a very messy exit.<\/a><\/p>\n 4. 1995 Offseason<\/p>\n Skinny: The \u201995 season marked a turning point in Heat history forever. You can\u2019t tell the story of the organization \u2014 or basketball altogether \u2014 without Pat Riley.<\/p>\n Well, in 1995, Miami, which failed to reach 43 wins over their first seven seasons, pried Riley away from the New York Knicks, igniting a bad blood between the two organizations that\u2019s still burning today. RIley laid the bedrock that culminated in a four titles and seven conference titles. He changed the entire culture \u2014 literally \u2014 and didn\u2019t wait long to bring in his first franchise pillar, Alonzo Mourning, in November of 1995.<\/p>\n Truthfully, you could argue this should be higher on the list because nothing else happens without this.<\/p>\n 3. 2004 Offseason<\/p>\n Skinny: It wasn\u2019t quite a parade, but it certainly felt like one.<\/p>\n Just over 22 years ago, hundreds of fans<\/a> gathered outside Kaseya Center (formerly American Airlines Arena) when Shaquille O\u2019Neal was announced as a member of the Miami Heat. Heat president Pat Riley snagged the disgruntled big man away from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant and a future first-round pick.<\/p>\n At the time, O\u2019Neal was coming off a 2003-04 season where he finished top-6 in MVP voting and top-10 in Defensive Player of the Year voting, averaging 21.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. He ultimately finished second in MVP voting in his inaugural season with the Heat and was a first-team All-NBA honoree in two of his three full seasons in the 305, helping the organization clinch its first-ever title in 2006.<\/p>\n While terms didn\u2019t end on the prettiest of notes, Shaq still averaged 19.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 205 career games with Miami. Not too shabby.<\/p>\n 2. 2026 Offseason<\/p>\n Skinny: When we look back on this 10 or so years from now, this final spot of this ranking will largely be dictated on whether or not Giannis Antetokounmpo can will the Heat to their first title. That remains to be seen.<\/p>\n That said, fresh off four-straight play-in appearances, Miami needed a jolt. And Antetokounmpo was arguably a better player than O\u2019Neal at the time of their respective acquisitions. <\/p>\n We\u2019ll see if that ages fruitfully, but Antetokounmpo is two years removed from averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 dimes on 62.5 percent true shooting.<\/p>\n We must also see how they round the roster. They have three spots available \u2014 two of which they will use. Combining their other moves in the aggregate<\/a> \u2014 drafting Ryan Conwell, signing Tim Hardaway Jr., re-signing Simone Fontecchio and extending Andrew Wiggins \u2014 this was a successful offseason. And it will be one that fans remember for a while.<\/p>\n 1. 2010 Offseason<\/p>\n Skinny: \u201cNot four, not five, not six, not seven, not eight, not nine\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Correct, LeBron, your summer was No. 1 on this list.<\/p>\n At the time \u2014 and even still today \u2014 he was ridiculed for uttering those words. Still, two titles in four years is nothing to complain about, even though we wish 1.) James didn\u2019t completely fold in 2011 and 2.) The honeymoon phase was strung out further.<\/p>\n Alas, this was the most successful offseason in Heat history.
