CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Two of Charlotte\u2019s biggest sports figures are set to face off in Mecklenburg County court.<\/p>\n
Records show that on Monday, July 27, a lawsuit was filed against former Hornets star LaMelo Ball by a property management company tied to Panthers legend Cam Newton\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
In the lawsuit, Agape Property Management Group — the Newton company — alleged that Ball failed to pay rent for luxury apartments in \u201cThe Trust\u201d building on South Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte.<\/p>\n
According to the suit, Ball entered into an agreement in December 2020 to lease two units for $15,000 per month.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit indicated Ball rented both units for years and sublet one to his manager, Jermaine Jackson. The suit said Ball bought one of the units in May 2024 but did not terminate the lease on the one Jackson lived in, and Jackson continued to live there.<\/p>\n
—> Also Read: LaMelo Ball reportedly traded by Charlotte Hornets: Trade details<\/a><\/p>\n In February 2025, the Newton company claimed it sent Ball and Jackson messages regarding increased rent and past due payments.<\/p>\n The lawsuit said Ball did not respond; however, Jackson did and the company said he indicated he would pay $20,000 and would move out by April 15, 2025. When the April date came, though, Jackson was accused of failing to leave.<\/p>\n The Newton company claimed the last time a payment was made was in May 2025. In July 2025, a notice to \u201cpay rent or quit\u201d was allegedly sent to Ball and Jackson. Even then, the suit claimed, they failed to pay and Jackson did not leave.<\/p>\n The lawsuit further claimed that \u201cthroughout the course\u201d of time Ball and Jackson lived in the apartments, they \u201cfailed to comply with the contractual terms agreed to,\u201d and \u201cfailed to timely or fully pay rent, accrued fees, or HOA compliance fines despite repeated requests.\u201d<\/p>\n As of July 1, 2026, the lawsuit said Ball and Jackson owed the Newton company more than $181,000 in rent, and accrued more than $90,000 in unpaid HOA compliance fees.<\/p>\n Through the lawsuit, Agape Property Management Group was seeking an amount greater than $25,000, with an exact amount to be determined at trial. The company also sought to have Ball and Jackson pay court costs and attorney fees.<\/p>\n A copy of the full lawsuit is at the bottom of this story.<\/p>\n Records show Agape Property Management Group is based in Atlanta, with NJC Ventures listed<\/a> as the registered agent. Cecil Newton — the name of Cam\u2019s father and brother — is listed as NJC Ventures\u2019 registered agent, with Cam listed<\/a> as the CEO and CFO, and his mother as the secretary.<\/p>\n Newton played for the Panthers from 2011-2019, and returned in 2021. He was named the NFL\u2019s MVP following the 2015 campaign, and led Carolina to Super Bowl 50 that same season. He holds franchise records in passing yards and touchdowns, and once held the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.<\/p>\n Ball played for the Hornets from 2020-2026 before he was traded<\/a> to the Minnesota Timberwolves in June. He won the Rookie of the Year award after the 2020-2021 season, and was named an All-Star the next year.<\/p>\n
