{"id":808538,"date":"2026-08-10T20:12:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/808538\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T20:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:12:16","slug":"mavericks-still-fully-committed-to-valley-view-site-for-new-arena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/808538\/","title":{"rendered":"Mavericks &#8216;still fully committed&#8217; to Valley View site for new arena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"The site of the demolished Valley View Mall sits vacant in Dallas, Friday, May 29, 2026.\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:16 \/ 9\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The site of the demolished Valley View Mall sits vacant in Dallas, Friday, May 29, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Piazza\/The Dallas Morning News<\/p>\n<p>Mavericks minority owner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/mark-cuban-goes-court-records-dallas-mavericks-22337662.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Cuban\u2019s legal dispute with franchise majority owner Patrick Dumont<\/a> has changed courts\u00a0\u2014 and a judge has ordered the case to be resolved through arbitration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Though the Mavericks say they are legally prohibited from discussing specifics of the case, one media report\u2019s interpretation of phrasing in a court filing has compelled the franchise to reemphasize its intention to build a new arena and entertainment district on the former site of Valley View Mall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still fully committed to Valley View and are doing our due diligence,\u201d Mavericks chief communications officer Gina Miller said. \u201cWe are 100% focused on doing the due diligence necessary to get this deal done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>On June 1, the Mavericks announced they had entered option-to-purchase agreements to acquire 104 of the Valley View site\u2019s 110 acres.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On July 8,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/mark-cuban-goes-court-records-dallas-mavericks-22337662.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cuban\u2019s attorneys filed a petition<\/a> in Dallas County\u2019s 134th Judicial District Court accusing Dumont of \u201cadversarial business practices\u201d and shutting Cuban out of the arena plans and other lucrative development opportunities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On July 31, the case was moved to Judge Bill Whitehill\u2019s Texas Business Court First Division. On Aug. 6, Whitehill granted the Mavericks\u2019 motion to send the case to arbitration. Whitehill scheduled an arbitration hearing for this Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Dallas Business Journal was the first to report the case\u2019s move to the same Texas Business Court and judge who in May ruled in the Mavericks\u2019 favor against the Stars in the teams\u2019 dispute over control of American Airlines Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The outlet\u00a0also interpreted wording in team attorney James Bookhout\u2019s Aug. 6 response to Cuban\u2019s petition as the Mavericks being uncertain and noncommittal about their arena plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The portion of the 106-page document, which was obtained by The News, reads in part:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cuban has demanded that he be involved in the search for the Dallas Mavericks\u2019 new home arena and the Valley View Options process. Because of the purely exploratory nature of the Valley View Options, and the uncertainty regarding which entity will operate the new arena, there is no current business opportunity to present to Mr. Cuban or Petitioners. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fact has been communicated to Mr. Cuban.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/mavericks\/article\/mark-cuban-patrick-dumont-mavericks-ownership-22367536.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Cuban-Patrick Dumont dust-up typifies three decades of Mavs owner rifts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Miller said there is no ambiguity, nor has there been a change, in the Mavericks\u2019 plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Technically, they have not fully committed to the Valley View site. The option-to-purchase agreement is a standard safeguard during due diligence. In the Mavericks\u2019 case, that means working through issues such as zoning, entitlements, and financing for what is expected to be a multibillion-dollar project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks established Arena Development Intermediate, LLC as the company that acquired the 104 acres from multiple landowners, but ADI won\u2019t necessarily be the Mavericks subsidiary that ultimately operates the arena\u00a0\u2014 which the franchise hopes will be complete in time for the 2031-32 NBA season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seritage Growth Properties owns approximately 20% of the Valley View site. As a public company, it was required to publicly file the Mavericks\u2019 option-to-purchase specifics, which also are contained in the team\u2019s petition response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mavericks are required to make monthly, nonrefundable payments of $169,200 that started June 1 and run through the end of the year. The monthly payments in 2027 will increase to $274,950 until the purchase agreement is fulfilled or terminated.<\/p>\n<p>As the Mavericks\u2019 court-filed response notes, the Seritage deal is \u201csubject to customary closing conditions\u201d and \u201ccross-conditioned and cross-defaulted\u201d with the their options to buy the Valley View site\u2019s larger tracts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Some Dallas city leaders and downtown landowners might hold out hope of a Mavericks pivot from Valley View, but in that scenario, the more likely Plan B would be the 200-acre Irving tract owned by Sands Corp., of which Dumont is chairman and CEO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for downtown Dallas, the Mavericks\u2019 only reported potential option, the City Hall site, appears no closer to having its fate resolved than 10 weeks ago, when the team announced it had chosen Valley View.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The site of the demolished Valley View Mall sits vacant in Dallas, Friday, May 29, 2026.
