Mitchell, along with several other student-athletes who exhausted their college eligibility following the 2025-26 season, is fighting the NCAA for a fifth year. A court hearing has been set for Friday morning, where Judge Brian Edwards will decide whether or not to open the transfer portal for all of the named plaintiffs.

Mitchell has been linked to Kentucky for a couple of weeks now, but the program has been careful not to break any rules. Since Mitchell is not officially in the portal, no formal communication can be made between the two sides. That being said, it’s no secret that UK will be among the schools interested in recruiting the two-time All-SEC forward. This new lawsuit being filed in the Bluegrass State does not seem coincidental.

Head coach Mark Pope has left his 15th roster spot open for a reason. He told The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman this week that physicality isn’t his team’s strong suit right now. At 6-foot-9, 230 pounds, Mitchell would help address that, but there is far more to his game than being big. There is an argument to be made that Mitchell will be the best of the fifth-year transfers if he ends up being able to put his name in.

A conversation can also be had about how Mitchell would fit into this current Kentucky team if all goes right with his eligibility status. But there is no denying his talent. He is someone Pope can plug right into the starting four spot. Let’s get to know more about Mitchell, who turns 23 at the start of September, in another edition of KSR’s Bio Blast series.

From a starter at Duke to All-SEC at Mizzou

A native of Kansas City, KS, Mitchell was a highly-regarded high school recruit out of Sunrise Christian Academy (KS), a well-known basketball prep school. He was considered a top 25 recruit in 2022. When it came to choosing a school, he was down to Kansas, UCLA, Duke, and Missouri. The Blue Devils and head coach Jon Scheyer (entering his first season as head coach at the time) won out for the McDonald’s All-American.

Mitchell spent two seasons at Duke. He started 67 of his 68 games played in 2022-23 and 2023-24. Mitchell averaged 9.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 27.1 minutes as a freshman before posting 11.6 points and six rebounds in 28.6 minutes as a sophomore. His shooting efficiency ticked up significantly from year one (46.9 FG%) to year two (54.0 FG%). Mitchell’s season-high as a freshman was 18 points — he hit 20-plus five times as a sophomore. He helped win an ACC Tournament championship and made an Elite Eight while in Durham.

“Mark is special,” Scheyer said following a win over Boston College in Feb. 2024. “He’s guarding post on one end and switching on guards. A lot of our offense runs through him. The bursts that he came out with right away in the second half were impressive. He’s the one that got us separation. We’re at our best when he’s attacking. I just love how assertive he was. He’s always trying to make the right play. He’s always playing to win.”

But the allure of returning closer to home appealed to him more than running it back at Duke. Mitchell hit the portal in 2024 as one of the top available players on the market. It didn’t take him long to land at one of his high school finalists, the Missouri Tigers.

Mitchell’s game slowly began to expand in Columbia. He started all 33 games as a junior in 2024-25, averaging 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds on 50.5 percent shooting. He earned All-SEC honors from both the media and the coaches. He averaged 21 points and five rebounds per outing across Missouri’s three games against top-five opponents. With the Tigers, Mitchell became more involved as a passer and found ways to get to the free-throw line more often.

His senior year in 2025-26 is when it started to click. Mitchell once again made the All-SEC Second Team, just the second Missouri player ever to do so twice. He led the Tigers in scoring (18.3), rebounds (5.2), and assists (3.6). His passing numbers nearly doubled his junior season production. Getting to the free-throw line became even more common. The ball was in his hands plenty. Mitchell was a primary reason why Mizzou made the NCAA Tournament.

And then there’s his performances against Kentucky. Mitchell went for 20 or more in all three matchups against the Wildcats. He posted 22 points and seven rebounds in a loss as a junior, but came out with a win as a senior in the regular season after dropping 21 points and four assists. Arguably his best game as a college player came in last season’s SEC Tournament, though. Mitchell exploded for a career-high-tying 32 points on 13-21 shooting to go along with seven rebounds against the ‘Cats. He was unguardable for that UK squad — even though the ‘Cats came out on top 78-72.

What the stats say about his game

Mitchell was on the ball a ton as a senior at Mizzou. Some of that was out of necessity due to the personnel around him. The Tigers were far better with him on the court compared to when he sat. His usage rate (25.3 percent) and assist rate (21.2 percent) both ranked him in the 91st percentile or better among all forwards last season, per CBB Analytics. He did this while shooting the ball at an above-average level. The bulk of his looks (48 percent) came around the rim. He was among the nation’s best at drawing shooting fouls.

When it came to outside shooting, Mitchell was efficient in limited reps. He hasn’t taken more than 55 three-pointers in any of his four college seasons. He was at 35.2 percent from deep as a freshman before going under 28 percent the next two seasons. But as a senior, Mitchell connected on 38.8 percent of his threes. His shooting form isn’t the prettiest, but they went through the hoop in 2025-26.

The all-encompassing advanced stats like Mitchell’s game, too. He grades out in the 89th percentile or better in the likes of RAPM, Win Shares, and PER. What the numbers dislike is his rebounding on either end of the floor. Mitchell provides plenty of size and physicality, but has not shown the ability to dominate the glass, particularly on the defensive side. He’s also shown a track record of turning the ball over and not making a notable impact on defense.

All in all, Mitchell would immediately boost Kentucky’s floor and ceiling if he ends up finding his way to Lexington. While not a perfect player, he can take a starting spot and has played over 130 college games for high-major programs. Finding a way to add him in mid-August would be a significant win for Pope.

Smoke continues to build around Missouri forward Mark Mitchell.
