But injuries and inconsistency quickly derailed their season.

One of the first signs of trouble was losing a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of the second game of the season against the Hawks and then a blowout loss in Atlanta roughly a week later that dropped the team to 3-5.

The Hawks ended up sweeping the Magic in their four-game division series last year.

To say the least, the reigning Southeast Division champions are a good measuring stick for the Magic right out of the gate in what should be a tricky opening to the season. Orlando will find out how good the team is very quickly.

The entire 2027 schedule is certainly a lot to digest. Nobody should try to take it all in through one sitting.

There will be plenty of time to dive deeper into the schedule and find the trouble spots, the rest advantage games and where the team’s mettle will get tested.

In the day after the schedule came out, we want to cover the basics as we break down the road ahead for the magic.

National TV Games

The NBA tells the world what it thinks the storylines will be and what should interest fans with the release of its schedule. They and their television partners tell everyone who they want to emphasize and advertise.

The Orlando Magic got their share of attention last year. They made the splashy move to acquire Desmond Bane. It earned them a lot of preseason hype and 14 national TV games.

The disappointment of last season and other stars moving around has dropped the Magic into the background.

Orlando will appear on national television just eight times this season with four of the games coming on Peacock — at least by reputation the lowest tier on the league’s national TV package.

The drop from 14 to eight was one of the biggest in the entire league.

Every NBA team’s national TV / streaming games in 2026-27 ⬇️

LeBron and Wemby get bumped up to the max 34 games, joining the Knicks and Lakers pic.twitter.com/yLHU08k1t1

— Lev Akabas (@LevAkabas) August 13, 2026

More than that, six of the national TV games will come after the All-Star Break including a pair of games against the New York Knicks — an Easter Sunday matinee on ESPN on March 28 and the Magic’s lone NBC Coast 2 Coast game on March 30.

At the very least, five of the Magic’s eight national TV appearances will come at the Kia Center, giving Magic fans a chance to showcase themselves. And allowing Orlando to put its best foot forward.

Back-To-Backs

One of the bigger questions most fans have when the schedule comes out is to cry foul over the back-to-backs and claim the league is working overtime to put them at a disadvantage.

Last year, the Orlando Magic’s decision to play in Europe put them a little bit behind the 8-ball and compressed their schedule. Orlando ended up traveling the most miles of any team in the league because of that overseas trip.

The Magic play the same number of back-to-backs this year — 14. But the schedule somehow does not seem as crowded or congested as years past.

Orlando will have its difficult moments. There are four of the dreaded home-away back-to-backs — including a Jan. 28-29 trip from Orlando (playing the Chicago Bulls) to Houston. The worst of the road-road back-to-backs is a Nov. 10-11 trip from Sacramento to Utah and a Dec. 18-19 trip from Brooklyn to Atlanta.

The good news is that the Orlando Magic’s final back-to-back arrives early March 9-10 when the Magic host the Phoenix Suns before traveling to face the Miami Heat.

Orlando’s last back-to-back last year came on March 31-April 1. The team had only two home-road back-to-backs last year. This will be a challenge the team must overcome.

When are the West Coast trips?

The Orlando Magic will always be one of the most travel-heavy teams in the league. That is just the nature of geography. Orlando is in the corner of the map.

The Magic typically take three extended road trips — two out West and a longer East Coast trip.

This year the West Coast trips happen early. Orlando visits Phoenix, Golden State, Sacramento and Utah from Nov. 5-11, and then the team heads to Portland, Los Angeles and Denver for four games from Jan. 12-17.

The longer East Coast trip comes after the All-Star Break in a season-long five-game, nine-day road trip to Miami (the team likely comes home after this game with an extra rest day), Atlanta, Chicago, Milwaukee and Boston.

What stood out to me going through the schedule is there are more extended road trips than normal. Orlando has seven road trips of three or more games this season. The team had just five of these trips last year.

Those extended road trips do not lead to longer homestands — five homestands of three or more games in 2027 compared to seven last year.

The start is especially road heavy with 13 of the first 20 games on the road. That will certainly be a challenge.

Home-heavy finish

That comes back around though. The Orlando Magic will have a very home-heavy finish with 14 of the 23 games after the All-Star break coming at the Kia Center.

Orlando will play a season-long six-game, 13-day homestand immediately after the All-Star break. That leads into the team’s longest road trip.

The best part of that homestand is that it does not feature any of the possible title contenders. They are all still playoff contenders — Charlotte, Atlanta, the Lakers, Indiana, Utah and Phoenix. But these are not the elite teams.

On top of this, the Orlando Magic have a four-game homestand near the end of the season against the Washington Wizards, Miami Heat (whom the Magic play three times after the All-Star Break), Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors.

Post-break homestands have often determined where the Magic ultimately finish during this playoff run for the franchise.

In the 2024 season, the Magic went 11-4 at home after the All-Star break, including 5-3 on an eight-game homestand, to propel themselves up the standings and into the 5-seed in the East.

It can also go the other way. The Magic went 5-9 after the break at the Kia Center, including a disastrous 1-6 homestand after the All-Star break in 2025. That essentially sealed the Magic into the Play-In Tournament.

Last year the Magic went 8-6 at the Kia Center after the All-Star break.

Taking care of these home games will be key for the Magic’s success.

Home for the holidays

For fans, the Orlando Magic have typically had a healthy amount of games at home around the holidays. Last year’s road trip over Thanksgiving was a rarity for the team. The Magic went on a West Coast trip the week before Christmas, playing a Boxing Day game against the Charlotte Hornets before the big win over the Denver Nuggets at home.

This year, the Magic will spend both holidays at home.

The Orlando Magic will return home for the big NBA Cup game against the Detroit Pistons on Nov. 24 at the Kia Center in the run-up to Thanksgiving. The Magic then hit the road that weekend for games at Washington and Detroit on Nov. 28 and 29.

The team will get to spend Thanksgiving at home with their families.

Orlando is also home over Christmas.

The Orlando Magic play a four-game homestand from Dec. 21-27 against the Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks. That should make for plenty of Christmas cheer.

Additionally, the Orlando Magic will host the New York Knicks on Easter Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. matinee on ESPN.

Pick a holiday and the Magic are home.

Single-game tickets for the 2026-27 season go on sale on Friday, August 14 at 1 p.m. and will be available online at OrlandoMagic.com/tickets, at the Kia Center box office (located on Church Street), or via Ticketmaster at Ticketmaster.com/Magic.
