He happens to be the brother of fellow NBA player Jerry Stackhouse and played his collegiate basketball at Florida Gulf Coast Community College and then Florida State University.

After not being picked up in the 1989 NBA Draft, Dawson played overseas for several ball clubs and also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for a time, which was the equivalent of the G League during that era. He was born in 1976 in Galveston, Texas. An unselected prospect in the 1997 NBA draft out of the University of Houston, Jones played in the CBA and other leagues before getting a shot with the (then) New Jersey (now Brooklyn) Nets in 1999.

Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!<img class="gnt_em_img_i" style="height:473px" fetchpriority="high" data-g-r="lazy" data-gl-src="https://www.rawchili.com/nba/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/77111054007-39-32602.jpeg" decoding="async" alt="WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 18: Damon Jones #13 of the Boston Celtics guards Mitch Richmond #2 of the Washington Wizards runs with the ball during the game at the MCI Center on April 18, 1999 in Washington, D.C.
