After an offseason defined by a well-documented swing and miss on LeBron James and a flurry of in-house retention, the 26-year-old Williams represents the Warriors\u2019 first notch on the board in free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 6-foot-1 Los Angeles native fits two of Golden State\u2019s glaring roster needs: a true backup point guard opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/deanthony-melton\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De\u2019Anthony Melton,<\/a> and an infusion of off-the-dribble creation off the bench. After years in Dallas playing on two-way deals, Williams cemented himself as a legitimate NBA rotational option for the spiraling Mavericks in 2025-26, averaging 13.0 points and 3.9 assists in 22.2 minutes per game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The jumper needs work, as Williams shot just 23% from deep on just over two attempts a night last season. Williams, though, offers the kind of slashing ability that will be sorely needed in a variety of bench lineups with star forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/warriors\/article\/warriors-jimmy-butler-details-acl-rehab-22321194.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Butler\u2019s ongoing rehab from a torn ACL<\/a>; he ranked 12th in the entire NBA in free-throw attempts drawn per 36 minutes in 2025-26 (7.5), ahead of the likes of Anthony Edwards, Donovan Mitchell and DeMar DeRozan.<\/p>\n<p>With Williams\u2019 addition, Golden State now has one remaining standard roster spot heading into training camp, which begins Sept. 29.
