Simmons seems to be in a good place mentally now, but with all the scrutiny that comes from being Ben Simmons, I wanted to know if there\u2019s added pressure for this comeback. \u201cNah, there\u2019s no pressure,\u201d he says. \u201cI had pressure when I was injured. This is why Simmons finds it particularly frustrating when people question his love of the game or his competitiveness, or constantly evaluate his game through the lens of how he once played. \u201cThe joy that I play with comes from being healthy,\u201d he says. \u201cHow do you love something when you\u2019re fucked up? How do you love something that you do when you\u2019re incapable of doing it?\u201d When I ask Simmons why he didn\u2019t just tell people how much pain he was in, he says that he didn\u2019t want it to sound like an excuse. \u201cThe people I\u2019m closest to, I\u2019ll explain it to them,\u201d he says. \u201cBut at the same time, I don\u2019t have the energy to prove it to everybody, you know? The plan is to stay in L.A. for a few days and then return to Miami, where he\u2019ll ramp up his training: two and a half to three hours of lifting and body work, as well as hour-and-a-half sessions on the court, with a day or two off every week. He hopes to be back to full strength by his 30th birthday, July 20. He\u2019s now an unrestricted free agent, and I ask him explicitly if he\u2019s planning to play in the NBA next year. \u201cI plan on getting as strong as I can physically, getting my ass on the court, and then the team realizing that my abilities will be needed,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t have a plan on where.\u201d He feels like he still has a lot to offer teams (\u201cYou can\u2019t teach 6’10” and IQ,\u201d he says), and he\u2019s been talking to coaches who have told him to get healthy, because if he\u2019s healthy, he has a spot. \u201cMaybe I\u2019ll go back to Philly,\u201d Ben Simmons says. \u201cMiami would be nice.
