Befitting the current media environment, the latest twists in the Kawhi story have given everyone in the sports news business a safe quarter for their suspicions: Ballmer\u2019s critics eagerly await Torre\u2019s next missive, which they hope will further expose the league\u2019s own perfidy. Meanwhile, sources closer to the owner and to the league seem assured that the NBA\u2019s findings will vindicate all parties and puncture Torre\u2019s own reputation in the process. If that happens, it will presumably complicate things for the Times as well<\/a>. \u2014 8\/22\/2026 Puck<\/a><\/p>\n

Days before that first Kawhi story broke, The New York Times struck a seven-figure licensing deal with Torre and Meadowlark Media to host Pablo Torre Finds Out on The Athletic. The deal presaged the increasingly complex nature of the Times\u2019s relationship with its sports media franchise. Much like ESPN\u2019s own licensing deal with Pat McAfee, the Times\u2019s new partnership with outside talent raised questions about the consistency and integrity of its editorial product. Would Torre be held to the Times\u2019s exacting standards, or did he get to play by his own rules? Torre\u2019s Kawhi reporting was undeniably strong, but, as a podcaster, it came with a layer of prosecutorial insinuation and anonymous sourcing that wouldn\u2019t have survived the Times edit desk. However the Times intended to manage this awkward choreography, it was happy to claim Torre as one of its own\u2014especially after Pablo Torre Finds Out won the Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting for its work exposing the Clippers alleged evasion of the salary cap.<\/a> The Times and its publisher, A.G. Sulzberger, proudly touted this as the first-ever Pulitzer for The Athletic. Torre gamely accepted the association with the Times, which he described as \u201can honor in and of itself.\u201d But, as Times and Athletic sources acknowledged to me this week, the prizewinning reporting actually started long before the licensing deal and was produced independent of the Athletic. \u2014 8\/22\/2026 Puck<\/a><\/p>\n

If a team were punished because of communications that contributed to a player on the team signing a deal with a team sponsor, the player could argue that such a move would have a chilling effect on his endorsement opportunities. Can a league restrict opportunities for a business to engage in sponsorship and endorsement negotiations with a team and a player on that team? This is a dicey topic, because there are businesses that enter into contracts with teams and players on those teams, and the inability to continue doing so could raise antitrust law, labor law, intellectual property law, freedom-of-contract and other legal problems<\/a>. Forget the Clippers and Leonard for a moment. Consider when Michael Jordan owned the Charlotte Hornets. Several Hornets players, including Kemba Walker and Cody Zeller, had endorsement deals with Jordan Brand, the Nike-owned company closely associated with Jordan. Chris Mannix: \u2018The question is, is there a punishment severe enough that the Clippers will accept, that the rest of the league will accept? I am talking about the 29 other teams right now because they are the audience on any punishment for the NBA. I have had several high-ranking team officials tell me throughout this process that if the Clippers get what amounts to a slap on the wrist, it is probably going to be open season on stuff like this.<\/a> If the worst punishment you get for cap circumvention is a fine and maybe docked a couple of second-round picks, then the risk is worth the reward of potentially landing a marquee player like\u00a0Kawhi Leonard.\u2019 \u2014 8\/19\/2026 YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

In his reaction video, Torre questioned several segments of ESPN’s article, most primarily the reported negotiation efforts between Clippers owner Steve Ballmer’s camp and the NBA to reach a potential resolution to the investigation. “This is typically not how investigations work, whether in the criminal justice system or in journalism,” Torre argued. “The subject of the investigation does not get to negotiate with the group that is doing the investigating.”<\/a> \u2014 8\/18\/2026 BasketNews<\/a><\/p>\n

ESPN’s Baxter Holmes revealed that the NBA Board of Governors meeting in September, along with the 2026-27 media day and training camp ahead of the new season, could answer many questions regarding the pending trade amid the league’s ongoing probe around Kawhi Leonard. \u201cI think there\u2019s two important dates to keep in mind. In mid-September, there\u2019s going to be an NBA Board of Governors meeting, and I think that will serve as kind of an infliction point as to we might have some clarity by then,” Holmes said on SportsCenter<\/a>. \u201cIf not by then, potentially by the end of the month, at the very least, when media day and training camps are set to begin for the coming season.\u201d \u2014 8\/18\/2026 BasketNews<\/a><\/p>\n

Two sources with direct knowledge of the situation said Leonard has maintained to the NBPA, league and Wachtell Lipton that he had no involvement in salary cap circumvention,<\/a> and so far conversations around potential consequences have centered on him paying restitution for potential improper benefits from the Clippers, such as travel and lodging, for his representative and uncle Dennis Robertson. \u2014 8\/17\/2026 ESPN<\/a><\/p>\n

The Clippers agreed on June 30 to trade Leonard to the Toronto Raptors<\/a> in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and draft picks. But the deal is on hold after the Raptors learned they would be taking on the risk for any penalties that Leonard might face — such as a possible suspension or his contract being voided — as a result of the investigation. Leonard and his agent and business attorney, Harrison Gaines, have had conversations with the players union over the last few weeks, and there has been no indication that he will face a voided contract, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks<\/a>.
