Minnesota selected Trey Kaufman-Renn in the second round of June\u2019s NBA draft. The forward played for the Wolves in Summer League last month.<\/p>\n
Now, weeks ahead of the start of training camp, Kaufman-Renn is suing the NCAA in an effort to secure a sixth year of eligibility to return to college basketball, according to the Indianapolis Star.<\/p>\n
The paper reported Kaufman-Renn has a hearing with Clark County Circuit Court No. 6 Judge Kyle P. Williams scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in pursuit of an added year of eligibility.<\/p>\n
Kaufman-Renn played four years for Purdue while also taking a redshirt season. His case is the redshirt season he took after suffering an injury in November of that campaign could have, under the old rules, left open the opportunity to apply for a waiver for an added year of eligibility.<\/p>\n
Such opportunities don\u2019t exist under the NCAA\u2019s new age-based eligibility model.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe does not ask this Court to give him something the old rules withheld,\u201d wrote attorney Mickey K. Weber in a brief obtained by the Indy Star. \u201cHe asks not to be the one person left outside a benefit the NCAA handed to everyone else. In withholding it, the NCAA has also forbidden every institution in Division I from competing for his services, which is a restraint of trade under Indiana law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kaufman-Renn, whom Minnesota selected No. 59 overall, has not signed a contract with the Timberwolves and would be a long shot entering training camp to make the NBA roster, or even garner a two-way spot. He\u2019d likely end up in Des Moines this season as a member of the Iowa Wolves if his lawsuit seeking a sixth year of collegiate eligibility is denied.<\/p>\n
The Indy Star said a Kaufman-Renn return to Purdue would be \u201cunlikely,\u201d even if the forward is granted a return to college hoops, meaning the forward would likely find another landing spot.<\/p>\n
