The group consists of Keyonte George<\/a>, Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/a>, Ryan Smith, and Will Hardy. While working out, the Utah Jazz social media team catches something profound. In the background, Hardy and Smith appear to be running laps together.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the camera settles on George, the point guard puts the cherry on top by saying<\/a>: <\/p>\n

\u201cOwner, head coach, it\u2019s a little different. What you\u2019re seeing is culture; it\u2019s culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Importance of Culture<\/p>\n

A short but powerful statement that ignited hope in Jazz Nation. The word culture always gets thrown around in the sports world. Sometimes it\u2019s mentioned so much, the word loses its meaning. Culture can make or break a team. If it\u2019s rotting like the previous Jazz teams did (Donovan Mitchell<\/a> and Rudy Gobert<\/a> fighting<\/a>), then a team crumbles. But if the team thrives, special things can happen.<\/p>\n

But what are the building blocks of this kind of culture, and how does it lead to championships?<\/p>\n

Importance of Cornerstones<\/p>\n

In every positive culture, important people build the foundation. Players, coaches, general managers, and owners all need to play their part to create a thriving system. If one key player fails, the whole team falls apart.<\/p>\n

The Owner<\/p>\n

The Jazz have the right owner. After acquiring the team, Smith announced his commitment to Utah and to one single goal<\/a>: bringing a championship to the state. Smith\u2019s dedication to improving the organization and promotion of Utah is unparalleled. He constantly appears on shows like the Pat McAfee Show to promote the Jazz and Utah.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He shows up to every game he can, and he\u2019s shown his willingness to make big moves to improve the team, such as the Jaren Jackson Jr. acquisition<\/a>. Still don\u2019t believe Smith helps teams improve? Take a look at Smith\u2019s other team, the Utah Mammoth, and how they\u2019ve improved every year under his stewardship.<\/p>\n

Though many argue that his dismantling of the team and plunging it into a rebuild doesn\u2019t show any commitment to winning championships, fans have to remember one thing: Small markets need the draft to acquire elite talent. The Oklahoma City Thunder won their first championship primarily through the draft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

General Managers with a Championship Pedigree\u00a0<\/p>\n

Danny Ainge<\/a>, the legendary general manager of the Boston Celtics, is now trying to do the same for Utah. He built the infamous 2008 Celtics championship team and helped construct its recent championship roster.<\/p>\n

In 2021, he left<\/a> his job in Boston to head to Salt Lake City to take a position with the Jazz. Four years later, the Jazz hired<\/a> his protege\/son Austin Ainge. Now free of the shackles of tanking, both Ainges can concoct wild trade packages to help the team win.<\/p>\n

The Jackson Jr. trade is a prime example of their effort. Not to mention Danny is no stranger to making necessary trades to win the trophy, such as acquiring Kevin Garnett<\/a> from the Minnesota Timberwolves. With a winning general management team at the helm, the Jazz can make the needed moves to bring the Larry O\u2019Brien trophy home to Utah.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Coach<\/p>\n

A good coach and players are the most important cornerstones to a winning culture. The Showtime Lakers wouldn\u2019t have won so many titles without Pat Riley<\/a>. While Hardy has yet to have a winning season, the coach showed flashes of his ability to coach early in the rebuild. In the 2022-2023 season, Hardy helped maximize the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2023, the Jazz were one game below .500<\/a> and contending for a play-in spot before the trade deadline. <\/p>\n

Nobody thought a lowly Utah team led by Lauri Markkanen<\/a> and Mike Conley<\/a> could achieve much. But Hardy coached them so well the front office was forced to trade<\/a> some players away to get worse. He\u2019s instilled a pass-and-play-hard mentality<\/a>, even limiting playing time to set a precedent.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say, if players aren\u2019t here to help the team, you won\u2019t play for Hardy and the Jazz.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Players to Lead the Way<\/p>\n

The final piece of the puzzle of a winning culture: the players. Michael Jordan<\/a> and Scottie Pippen<\/a> set the tone for Phil <\/a>Jackson\u2019s\u00a0system. Their example led other players to play key roles in their championship dynasty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Keyonte George continues to become that leader for the Jazz. It all started when he invited his teammates to Texas for a team trip<\/a> and made constant visits to Finland<\/a> to build chemistry with Markkanen.<\/p>\n

Out on the floor, the guard leads by example. He gets his teammates going through numerous assists and, when needed, takes control to win a game. His new teammate Jackson Jr. continues to make his impact felt as well.\u00a0In a recent interview<\/a>, the forward divulged how he continues to impart his wisdom to Utah\u2019s younger players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to tell them little stuff because I\u2019m a little bit older. A lot of them are younger,\u201d said Jackson Jr. \u201cJust stay even-keeled, don\u2019t get too high or too low. Don\u2019t get tired of the boring habits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ingredients Coming Together<\/p>\n

Once all of the cogs in the NBA team machine work in unison, special things can happen. <\/p>\n

Take a look at the 2004 Detroit Pistons. Under coach Larry Brown<\/a> and an eclectic cast of Ben Wallace<\/a>, Rasheed Wallace<\/a>, Chauncey Billups<\/a>, and Richard Hamilton<\/a>, the Pistons beat the juggernaut Los Angeles Lakers in the finals.<\/p>\n

Nobody thought a team without a superstar could win an NBA championship. But the Pistons proved that notion wrong. The tight-knit squad<\/a> executed coach Brown\u2019s schemes perfectly, making Detroit a defensive machine. Without their culture of playing ferocious defense as a team, the Pistons would\u2019ve suffered playoff disappointment like in years past.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not to mention, it took a dedicated owner and front office to find Brown and trade for<\/a> Rasheed Wallace to make this dream come true.<\/p>\n

Hope for the Future<\/p>\n

While many will argue that the Jazz don\u2019t have the talent to compete (the gaping hole<\/a> at center). That\u2019s when a good front office and owner come in to make the necessary moves<\/a> to improve.\u00a0Plus, many young players on the roster have more time to develop.<\/p>\n

The Jazz are beginning to emulate this 2004 Pistons team-first style. The front office continues to make moves to build the squad, while Smith invests in the team. With coach Hardy and the players putting in the work, the playoffs are imminent for this roster.<\/p>\n
