Defensively, of course, he is more of a forward, but he is the Lakers’ offensive engine and gets the title of point guard for that reason. When he is ranked both currently and all-time, he is viewed as a similar position to Magic Johnson.

Former Lakers forward Lance Stephenson certainly agreed with that premise when he recently ranked his five greatest point guards of all time. He went through some of the standard names — including Johnson himself — when he landed on the current Lakers star among his five, via The BIG 3:

“I got Luka at #1”

“Is that a hot take? Right now It is but, if Luka stays at this pace he’ll be top 5 ever.”

Lance is standing on it 🤣

New episode of 3s and Ones out soon on @YouTube and @Spotify

Powered by @MonsterEnergy pic.twitter.com/czzDh7WFys

— BIG3 (@thebig3) August 31, 2026

Stephenson did not rank them in order, but he had Doncic, Johnson, Stephen Curry, Jason Kidd and Isiah Thomas as his five best ever. This is obviously missing some all-time great point guards like Chris Paul, John Stockton, Russell Westbrook and Steve Nash. However, the point guard spot is historically stacked, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with the five he picked.

Stephenson got a bit of a reaction for adding Doncic to this list. But there’s no denying he has strong potential to finish his career as one of the best ever. He already has six All-NBA First Team selections in eight seasons, two scoring titles and is third all-time in points per game and 12th all-time in assists per game.

At his current trajectory, Doncic is going to go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball, and will do so from the point guard position, at least offensively.

Ziaire Williams praises Luka Doncic’s leadership

The Lakers are now unquestionably Doncic’s team, and he started his first year as the sole leader by inviting his whole team to Slovenia for a multi-day minicamp. His leadership qualities stood out to new Laker Ziaire Williams, who signed with L.A. on a one-year deal and figures to play an important role.

“I can tell (Doncic’s) leadership. He wants to step up even more this year,” Williams said. “I’m excited, man. I’m really excited to play with him. And of course, when we’re playing basketball, it’s just he makes the game just so easy and looks so simple.
