{"id":830022,"date":"2026-09-07T13:18:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T13:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/830022\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T13:18:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T13:18:20","slug":"jalen-duren-has-21-days-to-wise-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/830022\/","title":{"rendered":"Jalen Duren has 21 days to wise up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5s\">The Detroit Pistons\u2019 well-publicized standoff with Jalen Duren is now entering the second week of\u00a0September,\u00a0and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time for Duren to sign already.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5x\">I normally side with the players in these negotiations, and I am here, as I do think Duren\u2019s performance last season\u00a0warrants\u00a0a big raise even if he\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0good in the playoffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"62\">The Pistons are offering that raise, with a reported deal worth as much as 175-180 million over five seasons\u00a0on\u00a0the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"67\">But Duren is\u00a0reportedly seeking\u00a0upwards of $40 million per season, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/jalen-duren-contract-gap-reveals-what-detroit-pistons-actually-value\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gap which seems like peanuts<\/a> when we are talking about these kinds of gaudy numbers, the likes of which the average person can only dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\">I get why Duren wants more, as he did what the Pistons asked, and his fluky <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/nba-new-rules-screwed-detroit-pistons-on-jalen-duren\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">addition to the All-NBA team <\/a>made him eligible for a supermax deal worth $287 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6h\">The reality is much different, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time Duren accepts it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Duren is not getting a max deal from anyone\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">Duren has\u00a021 days\u00a0before media day, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/jalen-duren-deadline-sign-before-things-get-ugly-detroit-pistons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when things will get ugly<\/a> if he is not signed. Training camp starts the next day and if\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0not there, his offseason drama starts leaking into the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6w\">And at this point, there\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0any reason to continue this nonsense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">Any team that wanted to offer Duren a max contract could have done it, but not a single offer sheet came in for the Pistons\u2019 center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">One reason is that Detroit promised to match any deal, but we all know there is a number they wouldn\u2019t have touched, so if some team really wanted Duren, they probably could have stolen him or at least worked out a sign-and-trade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7b\">But there was never a palatable deal on the table, and since there are no teams left with cap space, the Pistons hold\u00a0all of\u00a0the cards here. The market has spoken, and it said Duren is not worth $40 million a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">That\u2019s\u00a0not just the\u00a0Pistons,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the rest of the league.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7l\">The deal the Pistons are offering is at least as much, if not more, than any other team can or will offer for Duren, at least right now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7q\">He has a potential<a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/kings-lifeline-will-show-what-jalen-duren-really-values-detroit-pistons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> lifeline with the Kings,<\/a> but that would require him to take the qualifying offer, play out next season, and then hope Sacramento (or some other team) offers him the full max.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7v\">He would still only break even financially in that scenario, and a lot of things would have to go his way, or he\u00a0could\u00a0take the safe route and build something special with the Pistons. In either scenario,\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0make the exact same money, but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0only if a team offered him the full max after next season, which is far from a given.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"80\">Duren\u00a0really only\u00a0has one choice here, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0to re-sign with the Pistons on the deal they are offering, which is not\u00a0substantially less\u00a0than he wants and represents his full market value as a basketball player.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">You\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0catch me siding with the\u00a0billionaire\u00a0owners, but this is about the reality of the situation.
