Growing Up Without the Games <\/p>\n
I grew up in Pennsylvania in the 80s, which meant something specific if you loved the Celtics: you didn\u2019t get to watch them. Not really. You got whatever the national networks decided was worth airing in prime time, and if Boston wasn\u2019t marquee that week, you were out of luck. So when the playoffs came around and you knew \u2014 knew \u2014 you\u2019d get every single game of a series, it felt like a gift. Appointment television before anyone called it that.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s how I ended up at my grandmother\u2019s house on May 5, 1991, watching Game 5 against the Pacers with my big brother.<\/p>\n
May 5, 1991 <\/p>\n
By that point in his career, Larry Bird wasn\u2019t the guy who made it look easy anymore. He\u2019d missed 22 games that season with a compressed nerve and a ruptured disc in his back. The pain had gotten so bad the night before Game 5. He spent it in traction in a Boston hospital.<\/p>\n
Teammates who saw him in the locker room before tip-off said he could barely turn around. He told them he was okay. He wasn\u2019t \u2014 not even close.<\/p>\n
Bird played anyway. With 4:37 left in the second quarter, he dove after a loose ball. He landed hard on his stomach and smashed his face into the Garden parquet.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t get up. They ruled it a severe concussion and a fractured cheekbone, and he went straight to the locker room. Nobody watching had any idea if he was coming back out.<\/p>\n

Bird Takes Over <\/p>\n
Then, halfway through the third quarter, the tunnel doors opened.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t remember deciding to cry. I just remember it happening \u2014 sitting there with my brother, watching this guy who\u2019d already given the Celtics everything he had. He walked back out anyway, with the Garden crowd going berserk around him. Tears of joy, no shame in saying it. I was a kid who barely got to see this team play. Watching the one player who made the distance worth it refuse to stay down meant everything.<\/p>\n
He wasn\u2019t fully himself right away. Chuck Person hit a three to put Indiana back up three, and for a minute the game still looked lost. But Bird found his rhythm: a full-court outlet to Reggie Lewis for a layup, a blow-by on Detlef Schrempf for a floater, a fadeaway jumper in the post. He finished with 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. The Celtics held on, 124-121.<\/p>\n
Why This One Stays With Me <\/p>\n
They lost the next round to Detroit in six games. A year later, Bird\u2019s back finally won, and he retired at the end of the 1992 season. Almost everyone who watched that Game 5 afterward figured they\u2019d just seen the last of what Larry Legend had left in the tank. In a lot of ways, they were right.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s exactly why this game stays with me. Every spring, when the playoffs start again, some part of me is still in my grandmother\u2019s living room. I\u2019m watching a guy who spent the night before in traction decide that one more night mattered more than the pain did.<\/p>\n
