The OKC Thunder have accumulated a plethora of enviable assets over the years thanks to Sam Presti’s elite negotiating skills and wheeling and dealing ways. <\/p>\n

Oklahoma City is almost certainly not trying to use one of these assets, in particular, this coming season.<\/p>\n

As part of the Lu Dort exchange with the Hawks earlier this offseason, the Thunder created a lofty $17.7 million Traded Player Exception. Such a luxury essentially allows a team to bring on a contract from another team via trade without having it count against their cap.<\/p>\n

Though the idea of utilizing such an asset may be exciting for fans to ponder, the reality is that if they were to eventually use it, it would almost certainly come as a result of injury.<\/p>\n

Thunder should hope they can afford to let TPE go to waste<\/p>\n

As we’ve seen over the past few campaigns, the Thunder seem completely content with their roster and, in turn, have shied away from making any splashy moves that could jeopardize their on-court chemistry as a collective.<\/p>\n

Utilizing the Dort TPE to its fullest extent would almost certainly be considered a splashy move for the club, for, generally speaking, someone earning a payday within this price range is often viewed as a quality rotation player.<\/p>\n

At full strength, the Thunder are already chock-full of such talents. From established All-NBA players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren to high-end role players like Ajay Mitchell, Cason Wallace, Jared McCain, and Isaiah Hartenstein, coach Mark Daigneault has a ton of mouths to feed minutes to as is.<\/p>\n

The only time OKC should truly consider utilizing their lucrative TPE is in case of an emergency, such as one of their regular rotation members succumbing to an unfortunate, long-standing health ailment. <\/p>\n

Outside of that, they should truly be hoping to have this exception go to waste.<\/p>\n

Thunder may look to training camp to fill 15 and final roster spot<\/p>\n

Though some have suggested the Thunder could look to use their TPE<\/a> to fill their 15 and final open spot on the roster, their recent activity indicates they may have other plans.<\/p>\n

On Monday, it was announced that Oklahoma City had signed undrafted free agent Christoph Tilly to an Exhibit-10 deal that will have him participate in this year’s training camp.<\/p>\n

The big man is merely the most recent talent who now appears slated to try and prove themself during Thunder camp, joining fellow first-year ballers such as Otega Oweh and Josh Dix in their quest to earn a standard deal with the club in 2026-27.<\/p>\n

To beat reporter Rylan Stiles, it seems rather likely that the final roster spot will be filled by one of these kinds of rough and raw young prospects<\/a>.<\/p>\n
