Bill Macdonald remains the play-by-play voice for both assignments.

For viewers, the distinction is straightforward: The familiar Macdonald-Lantz pairing continues at home, while Green gets a larger opportunity away from Los Angeles.

Stu Lantz returns after missing end of last season

Lantz missed the latter part of last season, and Green previously filled in on multiple broadcasts. That experience gives Green some familiarity with the assignment before it becomes a regular part of his work.

Lantz’s connection to the booth stretches across generations. The Lakers’ tribute to Chick Hearn identifies Lantz as his broadcast partner for 15 years.

That history helps explain why the analyst assignment carries weight beyond a personnel announcement. A local broadcast becomes part of the routine of following a team, and the relationship between its voices can matter almost as much to viewers as the individual calls.

An older discussion on the Lakers subreddit illustrates that attachment. Commenters praised Lantz and Macdonald for criticizing the Lakers when warranted and acknowledging opponents’ good play.

Some also liked Green’s chemistry with Macdonald during his fill-in appearances. Those comments predate Wednesday’s news, but they highlight what Green will be trying to build: a partnership viewers want to spend an entire game listening to.

Lakers broadcast assignments at a glance

The network’s announced assignments include:

Assignment
Broadcasters

Home games
Bill Macdonald and Stu Lantz

Road games
Bill Macdonald and primary analyst Danny Green

Sideline reporting
Mike Trudell and newcomer Roqui Theus

New studio analyst
Sasha Vujacic

When Spectrum’s Lakers coverage begins

Spectrum’s coverage calendar includes media day on Sept. 28, all five preseason games and 67 regular-season games.
