As a horde of television cameras pivoted away, a brave soul three rows deep in the ring around Stephen Curry<\/a> raised their hand and raised their voice. Chronicle<\/p>\n \u201cI try to never be the best person on the court,\u201d Curry smiled, finishing his answer. \u201cIf that\u2019s the case, then I\u2019m not getting challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n And yet, entering his 18th season in the NBA, the 38-year-old Curry will find himself as the unquestioned best player on the floor\u00a0\u2014 again\u00a0\u2014 as the Warriors tip off camp in Hawaii next week. Any attempt at big-game fishing in Golden State this offseason yielded nothing more than nibbles<\/a>. The roster around Curry, at present, is stuck, with a total of $123.8 million in cap space commanded by a 36-year-old Draymond Green<\/a>, 40-year-old Al Horford<\/a>, 31-year-old Kristaps Porzingis<\/a> and two presently unavailable wings in Jimmy Butler<\/a> and Moses Moody<\/a>.<\/p>\n So it\u2019s become increasingly apparent that Curry may not sign a contract extension before the start of camp<\/a>. Maybe not even in October.\u00a0<\/p>\n But not because he wants out of the Bay Area, as he reiterated to reporters at an event for the Currys\u2019 Eat. Learn. Chronicle<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been pretty straightforward and honest about, I\u2019m not going anywhere,\u201d Curry said. \u201cThere\u2019s just dynamics of\u00a0\u2014 where we\u2019ve been the last four years, where we\u2019re trying to go, things that are related to my contract, that can determine a lot of different things.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAnd, holding this team together for as long as we have, and the idea of us trying to reimagine what it looks like for us to be successful\u00a0\u2014 I get it,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s part of it. But, it\u2019s not like free agency or anything is of interest to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Could it be? Sure, by a sheer numbers game. Curry became eligible in late August to sign a maximum two-year, $136.7 million contract extension in Golden State, and has until June 30, 2027 to put pen to paper. If he didn\u2019t sign beyond that and hit unrestricted free agency, he could sign a maximum three-year deal worth up to $207 million in the coming summer. Chronicle<\/p>\n \u201cSo I just want to make sure I\u2019m doing right by me,\u201d Curry said, \u201cand by the team.\u201d<\/p>\n Curry gave cryptic answers on the particulars of his extension negotiations when asked by reporters Wednesday. Decoded, though, and the Warriors\u2019 larger-than-life guard is simply trying to balance career and financial self-interest with the franchise\u2019s ability to win games.\u00a0<\/p>\n Taking the full maximum, naturally, would enable Golden State to surround him with only so much talent.
