Much of the Timberwolves’ long-term core is locked up for the foreseeable future.

Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Ayo Dosunmu and Jaden McDaniels are all inked through at least the 2028-29 season.

The future of the organization’s basketball boss isn’t as clear.

Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly is in the final year of his contract. So, the man in charge of the long-term health of the roster could feasibly depart on his own accord.

Connelly has given no indications he’d make such a move. When questioned about his contract status on media day Monday, he reiterated his happiness with his current situation, noting his third child was born in Minnesota, and he and his family “feel really part of this Minnesota community.”

Connelly added that his focus is on “continuing to build and continuing to win games.”

He noted his time in Minnesota marks the first instance in which his contract status was known. Still, it is odd to lack a cemented long-term commitment in his role. Connelly has had potential outs at various points in his tenure — through contract options and available forays with other teams — but he’s still in Minnesota.

That’s what Connelly uses as evidence that his “commitment has been pretty consistent” to the organization.

Minnesota has experienced a heavy dose of ownership flux in recent years, with a turmoil-filled transfer from Glen Taylor to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez in 2025, followed by Marc Lore selling his majority shares to Marc Stad last month.

Connelly insists he’s “excited” about the new ownership group, adding he’s “been really fortunate to work with a lot of good people.”

The Timberwolves don’t own their first-round pick in the NBA draft of any odd-numbered year until 2035, as Connelly has been consistently aggressive in reshaping Minnesota’s roster through trades. The team’s 2033 first-round pick was dealt to Charlotte in the Ball trade nearly as soon as it was made available by NBA league rules.

It’s one reason it would be ideal to know if the Wolves’ top basketball decision-maker is in this for the long haul. But until a contract extension is formally struck, Minnesota will remain in a small form of limbo.

Much of the Timberwolves’ long-term core is locked up for the foreseeable future.
