I’ve seen little clips.”

Landry Shamet doesn’t need the tape. Everyone else already has it memorized: 11 of 12 from three-point range across the Eastern Conference Finals, the most efficient any player has ever shot from deep in a single NBA postseason round with a minimum of 10 attempts.

He missed exactly once.

What the numbers don’t show is how little certainty Shamet has ever had about being the guy who gets that chance.

He arrived in Tarrytown for his first Knicks camp in 2024 looking like a lock to make the roster, only to dislocate his shoulder in the preseason and get waived. Rather than let him walk, New York used a G League draft pick to keep his rights, stashed him with Westchester to rehab, and brought him back that December once he’d proven he was healthy. The following offseason, salary-cap math squeezed him even further — the Knicks were roughly $250,000 under the second apron and could only offer him the veteran’s minimum, a one-year, $3 million deal with no guarantees attached. That’s the contract he was playing on when the calendar turned to an NBA Finals run.

“Playoffs are funny in that way, and I feel like I’ve been privy to that with my past experiences, where you sit and you’re not in the rotation, but you’re one or two games away from being called on, being relied on to do something,” Shamet said. “I don’t know, I kind of just had a feeling, I’ve seen this movie before. It worked out.”

It worked out about as well as it could.

Shamet averaged 9.3 points on 44% shooting and 39% from three during the regular season, then scored 13 points off the bench in each of the first two Finals games. As an impending unrestricted free agent, he was positioned to command real money elsewhere — a taxpayer mid-level exception in the $6 million range was realistic on the open market, double his minimum salary with the Knicks.

Instead, New York locked him up on a four-year, $24 million extension this summer. It’s not a life-changing number by league standards, but for a player who has spent every offseason since 2024 wondering whether he’d have a jersey in October, it’s the first contract that didn’t come with an asterisk.

“Last couple of years I’ve been pretty open with you guys. It definitely gives you a sense of perspective and appreciation that I’m grateful for,” Shamet said. “To be believed in and have that offered to me, for me and Cammi to be able to stay here in New York and continue to grow this thing, it’s pretty special. To be asked to be a part of it is humbling and I’m grateful for it every day. It means a lot.”

The difference shows in how he’s carrying himself through this camp compared to the ones before it — the ones that started with a dislocated shoulder, a G League assignment, or a non-guaranteed minimum deal riding on his health and a roster crunch.

“In a way, it just makes me proud of myself. That’s why you work through the difficult times and the challenging and the questioning ones. Typically, there’s really good stuff on the other end of that,” he said. “It feels good, it feels good to be a part of this moving forward. I don’t want to drop my level or get complacent or any of that, that’s definitely not the feeling. It’s more, it just feels good to know you don’t have that heavy heavy wave running on your ass again this training camp.”

For a player who spent two years proving himself one non-guaranteed deal at a time, that’s the real story of his summer — not the shooting, but what it did for his family.

POP’S CONGRATULATIONS

Knicks head coach Mike Brown said his mentor, Hall of Fame San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, reached out to congratulate him after OG Anunoby’s tip-in lifted the Knicks to a 3-1 series lead in the 2026 NBA Finals.

“[Pop] is grizzled, experienced. He understands how this works. We actually talked a couple of times during the playoffs,” Brown said after Day 2 of training camp on Wednesday. “After OG’s tip-in, he called me and talked me through a lot of things. It was great to have conversations with him from time to time.”

Brown said the league’s coaching community fully embraced him after ending the Knicks’ 53-year title drought.

“The coaching community is tight. Everybody wants everybody to do well because they know that the guy across from them is the one that really knows what I’m going through or the other guy’s going through,” he said. “So because it’s that hard we really try to uplift one another whenever we can and when we won it, a lot of guys reached out if not everybody, and said congratulations in some way shape or form. It was great.”

FAMILY TIES

Miles McBride said the Knicks’ title run is bringing estranged families together — for better or worse.

“I have people coming to me and saying, ‘I haven’t talked to my family member in 10 years,’ and I’m like, ‘Well, we should not be the reason that’s happening,’” McBride joked on Wednesday. “But, you know, that’s cool to hear. Like I said, it’s not what I want to hear, necessarily, but those are cool moments to hear that what we’re doing on the court was able to bring people back together.”

“I haven’t watched it all back in full, no.
