Orlando was once revered amongst the goliaths for its imposing defense, ranking Top-2 in Defensive Rating two years in a row under Jamahl Mosley, until slipping to a league-average rank of 14th lasts season after injuries struck.

Now leading the way is new head honcho Sean Sweeney, walking up and down the sidelines, here to re-establish the things that made this group great while finding new ways to play to the team’s advantages and get the most out of the group as a whole.

Sweeney has a reputation as a defensive coach from his many stops around the league where he had his hand in helping build a competitive and often Finals-level team defense. He believes Orlando has the bones of that sturdy structure, the framework and foundation to rebuild elite defense as the team’s core identity.

At Orlando Magic Media Day, I asked Sean Sweeney how vital rebuilding a turnover-forcing defense that ranked Top-2 in two of the last three seasons is to the Magic’s success this upcoming season.

Sweeney answered by describing what makes a great defense and declaring that this Magic team wants to have defense that travels anywhere as a calling card to lean on and rely on at any time.

What the (question) speaks to is the foundation that has been laid here over the last few years. This team has won games; they have been competitive; they have been a top defense at times.

As it pertains to this season, we want to have a defense that is at a level that travels.

In my mind, a great defense travels. Whether you are on the road, in front of a big crowd, playing in a hostile environment against a great team.

We always want to be somebody collectively that has defense on our mind and use that as a calling card.

I asked different Magic players about their roles, their excitement for Sweeney, and goals for this season. A handful of players shared what’s expected of them on the defensive end. Here’s what Anthony Black, Wendell Carter Jr., Jase Richardson, and Izaiyah Nelson expect in their roles next season when it comes to helping this team get stops:

Anthony Black

I asked Black what his role could look like under Sweeney:

Just being a connector, offensively and defensively.

Taking pride in guarding for the full possession. Being more of a playmaker on defense, really trying to be a ball hawk, fly around in the passing lanes and rotations.

Offensively, doing all the same things – getting to the paint, connecting, being ready to shoot, being ready to play with different lineups, different people.

Just appreciate him being straight-forward, telling me what it is, telling me that he believes I can be a good player.

I asked Carter what his role and expectations could look like under Coach Sweeney:

He just wants me to kinda get out of my own way — not second guess things, be assertive, hold the defensive side of the ball down, help my team on the defensive side.

Be a great communicator. Definitely wants me to take shots when they are open, for sure, not turn down shots. That is really about it.

Showing up each and every day, being the vet that I know that I am, and help this team win.

— Ryan Kaminski NBA (@beyondtheRK) September 29, 2026Jase Richardson

I asked Richardson about his goals, role, expectations under Sweeney:

I think everything they said is kinda what I had in mind.

Somebody who is just a pest 94ft, that is just an on-ball irritant.

Guy that can knock down a shot at a high level, a guy that can get into the paint and make the right play.

And I think that is all three of the things that I had in mind when I came in here. Just constantly working on that every day, working on the fundamental things — whether that is passing, finishing at the rim on bigger defenders, so just working on that every day.

— Ryan Kaminski NBA (@beyondtheRK) September 29, 2026Izaiyah Nelson

I asked Nelson about his expected role under Sweeney:

He said — what I am best at — that is what they drafted me for, is my defense.

So it is just like, aint nothing new to me.

I feel like I am a very elite defender, and now I will just be an even greater defender, being under him.

While this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the Magic’s defense could look like next season, if it’s anything like the Magic of two or three years ago, the team will be as competitive as any when it comes to forcing stops and turnovers.

Richardson wants to be a pest who picks up full-court, Black aims to be a connective playmaker flying around passing lanes and rotations to force steals like a ball hawk defensive back turning a pick-six steal into points off turnovers, just like he and Jalen Suggs have done before.

Carter looks to remain the defensive anchor of versatility for Orlando at the five, able to switch on a dime on just about anyone in the league for at least a moment’s notice, making him one of the most valuable all-around two-way options at center in the league. Nelson, the Magic’s rookie, is excited to take his defensive impact to the next level under Orlando’s new defensive guru.

Sweeney’s goal is to build an elite team defense that travels, to make defense a calling card that this Magic squad can rely on; with defensive versatility at every position up and down the roster, this is certainly the right group of Magicians to pull that card out of their sleeve.
