(Photo by Harry How\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Former championship-winning center for the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Lakers,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/javale-mcgee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Javale McGee<\/a>, has signed a new contract with the Shanghai Sharks, now set to join another ex-Laker, <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/dangelo-russell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/a>, in the Chinese Basketball Association.<\/p>\n<p>While Russell\u2019s move to China was seen as a bit surprising, McGee last played in the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/\" title=\"NBA\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"501341\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA<\/a> during the 2023-24 season, and more recently took the court for several teams across the globe before now being set to join the Sharks.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, McGee isn\u2019t done playing basketball, but after winning his third NBA championship with the Lakers in 2020, his time playing in the USA slowly came to a halt, now continuing the international stage of his career at 36 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Champion Lakers Center Joins D\u2019Angelo Russell In China<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5456755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-1207892775-e1755442777477.jpg\" alt=\"JaVale McGee, formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers joins the Shanghai Sharks with D'Angelo Russell\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\"\/>GettyLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA \u2013 FEBRUARY 21: JaVale McGee #7 of the Los Angeles Lakers reacts during the fourth quarter in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Staples Center on February 21, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Katelyn Mulcahy\/Getty Images)\n<\/p>\n<p>McGee previously played in Puerto Rico, Australia, and the CBA\u2019s Beijing Ducks before it was announced he was joining Russell in Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree-time NBA champion\u00a0JaVale McGee has officially joined the Shanghai Sharks, putting two longtime NBA veterans on the same CBA roster after the Chinese club also signed guard D\u2019Angelo Russell,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/basketnews.com\/news-256546-javale-mcgee-finds-new-team-joins-another-former-laker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Basketnews.com wrote<\/a>, after the signing was announced. \u201cIn 26 (previous) CBA appearances for Beijing, McGee averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Russell, former NBA players Hasaan Whiteside and Brandon Goodwin are also current members of the Sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association have signed Javale McGee, joining D\u2019Angelo Russell on the team, the league announced,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Dd9Z7XnOqlU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">the account premeballing wrote in a post.<\/a> \u201cRussell, 30, was previously waived by the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/memphis-grizzlies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/a> a week ago after playing for the Mavs last season. McGee, 38, last played for the Sacramento Kings two seasons ago. (Photo by Robert Laberge\/Getty Images)\n<\/p>\n<p>Though he hit his most famous point in the NBA for his appearances on Shaqtin A Fool, McGee carved out a strong career as a backup center for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>After starting his career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/washington-wizards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Wizards<\/a> for four seasons, he then joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/denver-nuggets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> for some of the best seasons of his career.<\/p>\n<p>McGee then bounced around from the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/philadelphia-76ers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/dallas-mavericks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a> before joining the Golden State Warriors as a key piece in two different championship runs.<\/p>\n<p>After winning two titles with the<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/golden-state-warriors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Golden State Warriors<\/a> in 2017 and 2018, McGee signed with the Lakers in 2018, putting up one of the best seasons of his career, starting in most of the games he played with averages of 12 points, 7.5 rebounds, and two blocks on 62.4% shooting.<\/p>\n<p>He helped the Lakers win the 2020 NBA championship the next year, playing alongside star big man <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/anthony-davis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Davis<\/a>. That season saw McGee start in every single one of the 68 games he played, the only time in his career he did that.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time title-winner then bounced the league to several more teams, but last played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/sacramento-kings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sacramento Kings<\/a> two seasons ago. Along with the championships, McGee has career averages of 7.6 points, five rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks on 54.8% shooting from the field.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he joins another former Lakers player, Russell, in China as his basketball career continues.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/author\/eligregorski\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eli Gregorski<\/a> is a sports journalist covering the NBA for Heavy Sports.
