Presidents got team jerseys emblazoned with their names, and players got to smile and laugh with the most powerful person in the world. He’s a longtime Trump pal, a billionaire who backs ICE and data centers, and a surveillance network fanatic just like the president. Last month, he suffered a season-ending knee injury. In July, Trump pressured FIFA, international soccer’s governing body, to overturn a red card suspension of Folarin Balogun, Team USA’s best player in the World Cup. The team lost its next match, which ended its tournament run.

This month, for the first time since 1973 — when Trump garnered his first headlines after he was sued by the Department of Justice for refusing to rent apartments to Black people — the Knicks will start their season as defending champions. That still-unaccepted invitation could become a distraction when it shouldn’t be.

Brown, the Knicks’ coach, told ESPN last week that a White House visit is “something that our guys, or the organization, is internally discussing and, you know, whatever we decide to do, we’ll all do together.”

Team unity and the love of their fans helped the Knicks achieve what many thought they could never could — bringing an NBA championship back to New York.
