Dort gives Hawks defensive versatility few players can match

At 6-foot-4, Dort doesn’t necessarily possess the traditional size associated with defending bigger forwards or centers. However, his powerful frame, physical strength and defensive instincts allow him to compete against opponents who have significant height advantages.

Dort is built more like a linebacker than a typical NBA guard. That physical profile makes him difficult to overpower, particularly when opponents attempt to establish position or create separation through contact.

Snyder on Dort: “It’s hard to say what position he is because he can guard almost every position. There are some centers you can put him on.” https://t.co/Qh40tNYsa6

— Brad Rowland (@BTRowland) October 10, 2026

His ability to defend multiple positions also gives Atlanta another dimension that goes beyond traditional perimeter defense. Snyder can potentially assign Dort to opposing point guards, wings, power forwards and even certain centers depending on the matchup.

That doesn’t mean Dort should regularly defend every center in the league. There are obvious limitations against bigger, more physically imposing interior players, but having that option in specific situations creates opportunities other teams might not possess.

Atlanta already features excellent perimeter defenders in Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Adding Dort gives Snyder another dependable option capable of handling difficult assignments without sacrificing the team’s defensive identity.

Quin Snyder can unlock more possibilities with Atlanta’s lineups

Perhaps the biggest advantage of Dort’s versatility is how it could influence Snyder’s lineup decisions. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional positional matchups, Atlanta can become more aggressive with switching and defensive adjustments.

Imagine opponents attempting to create mismatches through screens, only to discover that Dort can comfortably defend the player receiving the switch. That ability can disrupt offensive actions before they develop and reduce the need for additional defensive help.
