Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball were finding space, the offense was producing points, and Miami was struggling to contain the new backcourt.

Barkley wanted the Wolves to approach things differently.

“I just think Minnesota shoots too many threes,” he said during ESPN’s halftime coverage. His concern extended beyond the number of attempts. Barkley questioned Minnesota’s willingness to fire early in possessions and pointed to its limited trips to the foul line.

The Wolves ultimately won 131-106, finishing with 21 made threes. Their performance offered an encouraging first look at the possibilities of the Edwards-Ball partnership.

It also raised a question about Barkley’s criticism: Was Minnesota settling, or was it taking the opportunities its new offense is designed to produce?

Charles Barkley wanted more pressure on the rim

3Oct 21, 2026; Miami, Florida, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves guard LaMelo Ball (1) reacts after scoring against the Miami Heat during the first quarter at Kaseya Center. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Barkley’s underlying concern was reasonable enough. A team that consistently launches contested jumpers while passing up better opportunities can make life unnecessarily difficult for itself. When those shots stop falling, an offense needs other ways to score.

At halftime, Minnesota had attempted only four free throws. Barkley wanted Ball to use the team’s pace to create more chances near the basket, rather than repeatedly choosing perimeter attempts with time remaining on the shot clock.

“When they don’t go in, you gotta get to the free-throw line, Ernie,” Barkley told Ernie Johnson.

There will be nights when that warning applies. Edwards and Ball cannot expect every game to feature the same shooting success Minnesota enjoyed in Miami.

But a low free-throw total over two quarters does not establish that an offense is generating poor opportunities. Neither does taking a shot early in the clock. The more useful question is what kind of attempt the possession creates.

Finch’s assessment was that Minnesota was generally getting the looks it wanted.

Chris Finch saw the shooting as a product of the offense

3Oct 12, 2026; New York, New York, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards (5) reacts after making a shot during the first quarter against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

Asked afterward about the Wolves’ three-point volume, Finch described attempts that came naturally from the game.

“I thought most of them came in a good flow,” he said in his postgame press conference.

Finch pointed to Edwards creating shots while in rhythm and Ball using Rudy Gobert’s screens. He also explained that increasing the number of threes had not been the team’s central instruction.

“We’ve not intentionally talked about upping our three-point volume,” Finch said. “We figured it would be a benefit of how we could play.”

Those comments were about Minnesota’s offense, rather than a direct response to Barkley. They nevertheless help explain why the coach could be comfortable with an approach that bothered the television analyst.

Ball gives Minnesota another player who can handle the ball, threaten a defense from well beyond the arc and deliver passes when defenders commit. Gobert’s screens create separation. Edwards can attack with the ball or receive it after someone else has already disturbed the defense.

The resulting opportunity may arrive quickly. Continuing a possession simply because the clock still shows 17 seconds does not necessarily produce a better one.

Miami’s defense helped determine Minnesota’s choices

3Oct 21, 2026; Miami, Florida, USA; Miami Heat forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (7) drives to the basket against Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jonathan Kuminga (24) during the third quarter at Kaseya Center. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Jonathan Kuminga offered another explanation for the volume: where Miami sent its defenders.

“Teams like Miami, they’re all collapsing, so they’re leaving people out there,” Kuminga said in his postgame interview. “I think it was a lot of them open, and why not take them?”

He also emphasized that the approach would depend on the opponent. That flexibility matters. Minnesota does not need to decide in advance that every game must include 50 attempts from three-point range. It needs to recognize openings and respond to the defense.

Against a frontcourt featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, repeatedly forcing attempts into a crowded paint would have carried its own risks. Available perimeter shots were a legitimate way to challenge Miami’s coverage and, most importantly, it worked.

The Wolves still found other sources of offense. They finished with 29 free-throw attempts, exceeding Miami’s 26, and collected 17 offensive rebounds. The final numbers describe a team that supplemented its shooting with additional possessions and trips to the line.

Edwards and Ball accounted for 30 of Minnesota’s 50 three-point attempts, making 14. Their ability to create and convert those shots is part of what makes this roster interesting.

The responsibility now is to maintain good decisions when the results are less spectacular. Some opponents will defend farther from the basket. Some nights will demand more cutting, driving or patience.

Barkley identified a challenge the Wolves will eventually face. Wednesday’s game, however, supplied considerably more evidence for trusting their offensive options than restricting them.

Minnesota found shots its best scorers could make, adjusted to the defense, and scored 131 points. Finch had good reason to let that continue.

Charles Barkley watched the Minnesota Timberwolves score 69 points in a half and saw an offense taking too…

[3778
7,2001,144,295,189,3881,6
post-865867","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami-heat","tag-basketball","tag-charles-barkley","tag-heat","tag-miami","tag-miami-heat","tag-miamiheat","tag-nba
["GET
