It whispers to you at halftime, when the score is tied, and everything feels fine, and by the time you hear it clearly it’s too late — the game is gone, and you were the one holding the knife.

That’s what happened Friday night at crypto.com Arena. The Clippers didn’t get beaten by the Lakers so much as they misplaced themselves. They surrendered 33 points off 26 turnovers in a 125-117 loss.

“You can’t play against a good team and turn over 26 times and expect to win the game,” Ty Lue said afterward, and there was no anger in his voice — something worse. Resignation. “We fought, we played hard, but we didn’t play smart.”

Played hard. Didn’t play smart.

Notice the pairing, because that’s the whole tragedy in 10 words. Effort without judgment is just cardio.

For a while, the game had all the makings of an ambush.

Isaiah Jackson pinned Walker Kessler’s opening reverse against the glass — a block that ended the 7-foot-2 center’s perfect-shooting streak before it could start breathing.

The Clippers plastered every rebound, swarmed every dribble, and shot a blistering 6-for-8 from deep in the first quarter.

Kris Dunn had his hands everywhere — poking, prying, turning Austin Reaves’ baseline dance into a turnover. They held Luka Dončić, the league’s reigning scoring champion, to 2-for-10 in the frame, 1-for-5 from three.

They led 31-27. Then 11 in the second quarter. They were the better team for twenty-four minutes, and they knew it.

They had their hands and bodies in the perfect position every time, executing the game plan perfectly, and for a half, the promise held.

Then the shots went cold. The buckets stopped falling.

And here’s the cruel mathematics of basketball: when the shooting deserts you, the margin for error vanishes with it.

Every mistake becomes a catastrophe; every lazy pass becomes a fast break going the other way.

The Clippers had built a lead on defense and shooting. But when the latter one left the building, the former one had to be perfect.

It wasn’t close to perfect.

The third quarter was a mugging.

The Lakers outscored the Clippers 39-26, shot 20 of their first 29 after halftime and turned a tied game into a 103-90 runway.

Kessler — after missing his first shot in a Lakers uniform — made his next eight and finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots.

Reaves scored 28 with nine assists, at one point 8-for-10 from the floor, operating in the space that opened every time the Clippers sent two and three bodies at Dončić.

And Dončić? He had 11 turnovers — a career high — and the Clippers still couldn’t make it matter.

That’s the part that should keep Lue up tonight.

“Both of them, you know, Luka’s a great player and Austin’s a good player,” Lue said. “When you try to take Luka out of the game and you have another weapon on the side that can go one-on-one or attack with space — he’s really dangerous.”

The Clippers blitzed the head of the snake, and the snake had already grown a second head.

Classic hydra arithmetic.

The defense was supposed to be the constant. Instead, it leaked — off-ball lapses, broken pick-and-roll rules, a low man who never pulled in.

“Our off-the-ball defense, pick and roll,” Lue said. “We said with Kessler, we want to pull in, first guy chucks, low man’s going to be there — and we just didn’t trust it. He got a lot of over-the-top passes, a lot of layups and dunks.”

How does a 7-foot-2 man hide on a basketball court?

The Clippers managed to lose him. Repeatedly.

There’s an old coaching axiom that a team that doesn’t trust its scheme doesn’t have a scheme — it has a suggestion box.

Here’s the number that tells the whole story: the Clippers forced 21 turnovers and scored 29 points off them.

A masterclass in opportunism; they committed 26 and gave up 33.

On any other night, that would win the turnover battle in volume, yet they lost it in value, like a man who finds twenty dollars on the sidewalk and leaves his wallet on the bus.

Their possessions didn’t just disappear — they mutated into Laker layups, momentum swings, a roaring building and a six-point deficit down the stretch that felt like sixty.

Turnovers compromise your defense.

You can’t get back. It’s not like the Lakers were just flat-out playing aggressive defense.

The Clippers woes were self-inflicted.

The most honest two words spoken all night.

The Lakers’ defense didn’t dominate them.

This was the Clippers, passing to a man who wasn’t there, as they shuffled their feet in the corner. Darius Garland, the starting point guard, had nine turnovers — offsetting his 26 points and six assists. His gift-wrapped nine giveaways, a brilliant performance, were like a bucket of water with a hole in the middle.

“He’s the head of the snake and he has to take care of the basketball, score the basketball and also get guys involved,” Lue said of Garland. “Teams are going to throw a lot of different looks at him. He’s just got to be ready for it.”

The mistakes were democratic — guards, wings, bigs, everyone contributing to the loss.

The Clippers actually took more shots than the Lakers, 83 to 79. They did better on the offensive glass. They had more possessions.

That doesn’t happen unless you’re giving something away for free.

26 somethings, to be exact.

Rui Hachimura walked into the building where he spent four and a half seasons and got the polite applause reserved for the departed — a nice moment, a few laughs with Dončić at the foul line, a forced travel on his old teammate, some traded trash talk in a language only they fully understood.

“It feels good,” Hachimura said of the reunion. “I miss all those guys.”

Then the game started, and the extra attention found him, as it does for every player who leaves a contender for a team that needs him to be more.

Hachimura finished with 16 points and six rebounds, and the word he kept reaching for in the locker room was spacing.

When Garland gets blitzed, he said, the wings can’t hide in the corners.

Everyone has to be in the right spot.

“When they’re blitzing DG, we are kind of hiding in the corner and all that,” Hachimura said. “Spacing got to be right. I think we watched a little bit, but I think we have some improvement and we’re going to watch film in practice and then we’re going to fix it.”

Brook Lopez, all 38 years of him, was the steadiest Clipper on the floor — 22 points, 15 before halftime, rewinding the clock to a version of himself that lives in the mid-post and dares you to move him.

It wasn’t enough, because nothing was enough on a night when the team treated the basketball like it owed them money.

Lue was asked what carries forward against Oklahoma City, and he didn’t reach for silver linings.

“We’re going to play hard. We’re going to scrap to the end,” Lue said. “But 26 turnovers is too much to overcome, especially on the road, especially playing against a good team.”

Two games into a rebuild nobody asked for — no Kawhi, no Paul George, no James Harden, a roster of new faces learning each other’s rhythms in real time — the Clippers already know who they are.

The question is whether they’ll keep being it. Hard-playing and hard-headed is a bad marriage.

It ends with nights like this one, where you do everything right except the thing that mattered most.

You have to know who you can poke and who you can’t. The Clippers’ version of that lesson is simpler and more painful: You have to know who has the ball.

26 times Friday night, the answer was nobody.

LOS ANGELES — A special kind of defeat doesn’t come from the other side of the court; it…

[3790
1013,7,369,791,2542,560,529,528,4034,1698,300,4044,251,135,150,4033,4043,368,6,67,526,1012,4536,1405
post-866625","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles-lakers","tag-austin-reaves","tag-basketball","tag-brook-lopez","tag-darius-garland","tag-isaiah-jackson","tag-james-harden","tag-kawhi-leonard","tag-kris-dunn","tag-la","tag-la-lakers","tag-lakers","tag-lalakers","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-clippers","tag-los-angeles-lakers","tag-losangeles","tag-losangeleslakers","tag-luka-doncic","tag-nba","tag-news","tag-paul-george","tag-rui-hachimura","tag-tst-los-angeles","tag-walker-kessler
["GET
