Every year my wife and I volunteer to help prepare tax returns for some of the poorest residents in San Antonio.

Thousands of these returns are for folks who have only Social Security.

Spurs games are no longer broadcast on cable network. To watch their team play, they must choose a streaming service that charges more than $100 for the full season, plus the wireless service it requires.

For many of these folks, the Spurs are everything to them. Spurs Sports & Entertainment should be ashamed of themselves.

The Spurs players and their owners make millions, yet they can’t let the poorest of San Antonio watch the games through their local broadcast channel.

In protest, we will not pay for the streaming service.

We’ve been Spurs fans for more than 40 years, but we refuse to support an organization when the almighty dollar rules over common sense.

It is hard for me to imagine that President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice to preemptively challenge an election in Alaska because the names of two candidates for U.S. Senate are similar — incumbent Sen. Daniel S. Sullivan and challenger Daniel J. Sullivan.

It appears that Trump doesn’t think Republican voters are smart enough to tell the difference.

This says more about the cerebral function of Trump than GOP voters.

As winter nears, it’s worth recalling a simple, effective way to lower our risk of infection from airborne diseases such as COVID-19, flu and measles: masks.

High-quality respirators like N95s reduce exposure to infectious airborne pathogens when properly fitted and worn.

Former U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Thomas Frieden and colleagues reviewed more than 40 studies. They found strong evidence supporting community masking to limit COVID-19 transmission.

Masks, like seat belts, aren’t guarantees of safety. They work best when used correctly, consistently and widely, and when trusted authorities clearly communicate their benefits.

Investing in vaccines is worthwhile, but layered defenses are stronger than any single intervention. We can blunt illness and deaths during infection surges and future pandemics by also maintaining domestic capacity to rapidly mass produce high-quality respirators.
