During its 111-104 victory<\/a> over the Indiana Pacers on Friday in Game 4 of the NBA Finals,\u00a0Oklahoma City became the highest-scoring team in league history, eclipsing a record the Golden State Warriors<\/a> held for six years.<\/p>\n

The scoring record takes into account both regular-season and playoff games. And technically, the Thunder<\/a> would have broken the record on Wednesday if their appearance in the NBA Cup championship game<\/a>, which is considered an exhibition, counted in any league totals.<\/p>\n

But now, no matter how one counts, it belongs to the Thunder. They came into Game 4<\/a> of the NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers needing 68 points for the record and got it on a free throw by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 6:09 left in the third quarter on Friday night.<\/p>\n

That gave the Thunder 12,162 points, breaking the mark of 12,161 scored by the Warriors in 104 games during the 2018-19 season<\/a>. Friday\u2019s game was the 102nd official contest for the Thunder. (They scored 81 points in the NBA Cup championship game loss to Milwaukee in December, a point total and outcome that doesn\u2019t factor into any season stats.)<\/p>\n

In 2018-19, the Warriors compiled a 57-25 regular season record and a 14-8 playoff record, advancing to the Finals before losing to the Toronto Raptors<\/a> in six games.<\/p>\n

For the Warriors during the 2018-19 regular season, Kevin Durant<\/a> had a team-leading 2,027 points in 78 games followed by 1,881 points for Steph Curry in 68 games and 1,680 points in 78 games for Klay Thompson. In the playoffs, Curry led the Warriors with 620 points in 22 games, followed by 435 for Thompson in 21 games.<\/p>\n

Durant had 387 points in 12 games. He missed nine games after he suffered a right calf strain during Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the\u00a0Houston Rockets, then saw his season end with a torn Achilles<\/a> during Game 5 of the\u00a0Finals.<\/p>\n

The NBA total-points record is the latest entry on a history-making season for the Thunder, who set a franchise record with 68 regular-season wins and \u2014 if they win the NBA title \u2014 would become the fourth team in league history to post at least 84 victories in a full season.<\/p>\n

Only the Golden State Warriors (88 wins in 2015-16), Chicago Bulls (87 in 1995-96), and the Bulls again (84 in 1996-97) have reached 84 wins in a single season.<\/p>\n

The season\u2019s longevity, of course, influences the total points mark. The Thunder were only fourth in points per game during the regular season behind Cleveland, Memphis, and Denver, and when adding in playoffs, Oklahoma City\u2019s scoring average this season was only 27th in NBA history.<\/p>\n
