The Kansas City Chiefs look to get back to their championship form when they host the Denver Broncos for the first Monday Night Football game of the season. From 2016-2024, the Chiefs dominated this AFC West by winning nine straight titles. They won three Super Bowls in three of those years and made the big game two more times. That all changed last year when the Denver Broncos won their first division championship in 10 years and made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game. Kansas City still has more all-time AFC West titles, 17, compared to the Broncos’ 16. The Chiefs have an NFL-best 29-15 in primetime games since Patrick Mahomes became the starter in 2018, but they were 3-4 in primetime games last season. Mahomes had season-ending knee surgery in December after tearing ligaments in his left knee. This will be the first time we see Mahomes suit up this season.

Another reason the Chiefs are expected to return to form is that Mahomes is getting proven production in the run game, especially since Kansas City signed Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker to become its starting running back. Walker gave Sam Darnold the balance he needed to have a great first season in Seattle, so imagine what his production can do for Mahomes. It also doesn’t hurt that Mahomes will have offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy back at the helm. He helped Mahomes develop in his early career.

Denver has had their injury concerns at quarterback as well in the offseason. After a classic game against the Buffalo Bills at home in the AFC Divisional Round, Bo Nix broke his right ankle to end his season. During the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, Denver was hobbled mostly do to a lack of production from its backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Nix is expected to be ready for this opener and he was helped in the offseason by an incredible signing of wide receiver in Jaylen Waddle. If Waddle becomes the No. 1 receiving option for Nix, it will open up Courtland Sutton for the potential for much more explosive deep plays. In this Sean Payton offense, the sky seems the limit at a mile high in Denver. It doesn’t hurt either that they still have one of the best defenses in the league led by Patrick Surtain II.
