Drew Brees considered coming out of retirement to play for Broncos, ESPN insider says

  • September 15, 2026

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Drew Brees considered coming out of retirement to play for the Broncos last season.

Sources told ESPN that the Denver Broncos’ then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive assistant Pete Carmichael talked with Brees about playing in the AFC Championship Game months before he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He would have been taking the place of Bo Nix, who was out with an ankle injury.

The arrangement would have reunited Brees with his former Saints head coach Sean Payton, who is now the Broncos’ head coach.

According to those sources, Brees, who is 47 years old, wanted to first work out how his body would respond to getting back in the game. And when he tried to play, he found discomfort in his wrist and ultimately declined the idea.

It is worth mentioning that the Saints have Brees on their reserve-retired list, meaning they still own his rights. Therefore, no one can sign him out of retirement without the Saints’ permission.

Brees announced his retirement in March 2021.
