The Eagles won in Week 1, but they showed a clear liability on offense. The Titans have to take advantage of it if they’re going to take a step forward in Week 2.
The Tennessee Titans need to flush their embarrassing Week 1 loss to the Jets in a hurry.
Nashville hosts the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in a matchup that looks daunting on paper, but a significant Eagles offensive line shakeup presents an opportunity they could take advantage of. Guard Landon Dickerson is headed to injured reserve, and the Titans’ defensive front has a golden opportunity to prove that Week 1 was a fluke.
Dickerson’s ugly Week 1 and what it means for Philadelphia
Dickerson was flat out bad against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. He was part of an unusually poor performance from the Eagles in both run blocking and pass protection. Nate Tice, speaking on Yahoo’s “Football 301” podcast, highlighted how the Commanders finished with a 37% success rate and 4.8 net yards per attempt, which is quite poor by their (or any) standards. “Landon Dickerson can’t play anymore,” he said plainly. “Like, he should not play. He does not look great.”
Reached out to a scout inside the NFC East who had this to say about Landon Dickerson:
“He’s a flat out warrior, tough as they come, but man I don’t think he’s been right for a long time… wish him the best but this might be the beginning of the end. The guy can’t move.”

Dickerson himself agreed with that assessment on Philadelphia radio after the game, admitting, “honestly, I played like shit yesterday.”
He talked about being a complete liability, and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni confirmed Dickerson would be going on IR and be gone “for the foreseeable future.”

The numbers back up how rough his day was. Dickerson allowed four pressures on an 8.8% pressure rate per dropback in Philadelphia’s narrow win at home. The Eagles’ run game was well below its usual standard, averaging just 0.3 yards before contact per rush. Running back Saquon Barkley was getting hit immediately on every attempt, finishing with 83 yards on the ground. That total looks respectable until you realize 78 of those 83 yards came after contact. Philadelphia’s offense was relatively one-dimensional, making life harder on quarterback Jalen Hurts in the passing game.
What this means for the Titans’ defensive front
For Tennessee, Dickerson’s absence should play to the defense’s strengths… on paper. The Titans’ defensive line is stronger on the interior with Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin-Myers than it is at edge. The problem? That was the roadmap to success against the Jets in Week 1 too. New York had better tackles and a weaker interior, and the Titans failed to capitalize.
This is their opportunity to beat the allegations, a much better one than anyone would have guessed before the season. All indications from Philadelphia are that second-year lineman Drew Kendall is expected to step in at left guard. Kendall was drafted as a backup center last season but was reportedly getting left guard reps and performing well in training camp while cross-training at the position. He’ll be playing guard for the first time in the NFL Sunday if he gets the nod.
That is a very intriguing matchup to monitor! Kendall holding up against the likes of Simmons and Franklin-Myers is a tall order for a young player at a new position. It’s a no-excuse spot for the Titans after what the Eagles’ offense looked like in Week 1.
This Titans defense has no excuse to not be one of the better run defenses in the league. I’ve said it all offseason and Week 1 doesn’t change that. Against the Jets, they did not look the part. Against the Eagles in a compromised spot, the opportunity is staring them in the face. Sunday’s game in Nashville will be a telling indicator on whether this defense is the real deal, or whether Week 1 was a preview of a longer struggle.
