To celebrate Latino Heritage Month and recognize the rich cultural contributions of Latino communities throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Seahawks are spotlighting local artist Angelina Villalobos, who designed the artwork featured in the Latino Heritage Collection. The collection celebrates Latino heritage, Seahawks culture, and the communities that bring them together.
The design reimagines the Mexican flag through a Pacific Northwest lens. The artwork features a Seahawks-inspired osprey, a cherry tree, a salmon, and an array of stylized flowers through vibrant colors.
“As an artist, I’ve always told my story through color. It’s how a shy kid from Beacon Hill learned to take up space,” Villalobos said. “Campeones del Sol is a reflection of who I am: a Mexican American Seattleite whose family stretches from San Antonio to Guerrero to right here at home. I want people to see that you can be all of those things at once: immigrant, migrant, first-gen, and a proud Seahawks fan and wear that pride without apology. When we all root for the same team, we all root for the same dream.”
Villalobos said she drew inspiration from a recent trip to Mexico City, which inspired her to honor Mexican history.
“With that at the forefront of my brain, I wanted to create a design that honored that history, but also was contemporary and new because that’s who I am. A few of the details you might not completely pick up when you first look at the design is the bitter-cherry branch, the flowers, but also the colors. I was very intentional with the colors. The blue and green for the Seahawks, right? Because it’s the Mexican flag there are red, green and white for who I am, but there are also red, white and blue because that is also who I am.”
The medallion featured in the design, titled Campeones del Sol means Champions of the Sun and is based on Aztec gods.
A component of the design, and the main design featured on the jacket and hat of the collection is called the “God of Football” which is a football player illustrated in a style inspired by Indigenous Mexican imagery. This blended Indigenous symbolism, football culture, and bold graphic storytelling. Inspired by pride, resilience, and connection, this collection honors the cultures and communities that help shape the Pacific Northwest and the 12s.
The collection features a hat, tee, hoodie and jacket that will be available exclusively in-store at The Pro Shop store locations at Lumen Field and The Landing in Renton starting September 15th.
