There is reportedly a chance Kyler Murray could play Sunday against the Chicago Bears despite suffering an injury in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported Friday the Minnesota Vikings quarterback is progressing through concussion protocol and “did more in practice Thursday than Wednesday.” If and when he is cleared, the Vikings will then have to choose between starting him or sticking with Carson Wentz for at least one more game.
Murray, who was limited to just five games last season for the Arizona Cardinals, was one of Minnesota’s key additions this offseason and won the starting job over J.J. McCarthy.
However, he threw just five passes against the Packers before suffering the head injury in the first quarter. Wentz, who was named the backup quarterback over McCarthy, was thrust into action and directed an impressive comeback.
Despite trailing 22-10 in the third quarter, the Vikings ended up defeating Green Bay 39-22.
Wentz completed 12 of his 19 passes for 133 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions while the Minnesota defense held the Packers to just three points after halftime.Â
“That’s why he’s here,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters when discussing Wentz. “For him to come in and do what he did and just be part of that calming presence that allowed our team to continue playing, I can’t say enough about him.”
Having an experienced option like Wentz who played well in the season opener gives the Vikings a solid insurance policy should Murray not be ready to face the Bears. They could also play things safe and use more caution with Murray after his setback and wait until Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chicago is coming off its own win over the Carolina Panthers in its season opener, although either Murray or Wentz will be facing a defense that looked vulnerable in the 59-37 contest.
