There’s no sport in America more chaotic, untrammeled and mesmerizing right now than college football. And there’s no coach in college football more infuriating, polarizing and can’t-miss than Lane Kiffin. It’s like these two were made for one another.
Kiffin is college football’s trickster god, a why-so-serious edgelord devoted entirely to himself, acting without shame or apology. He’s neither conquering hero nor comic-book villain. He’s more like a natural force, a hurricane blowing into your town delivering both national attention and instant football respectability … at substantial cost. You love him for as long as he’s yours, and then one day, poof, he’s gone, leaving nothing but a few motivational Instagram posts and the scent of hot-yoga candles in his wake.
This weekend, Kiffin and his current team visit the home stadium of his spurned ex. LSU-Ole Miss is getting the full-on Game of the Century treatment, from the anointment of a College GameDay telecast to the wall-to-wall coverage from every major media organization covering college football, Yahoo Sports very much included. (Hey, fish where the fish are, right?)
LSU and Ole Miss are both highly ranked programs with talented rosters and playoff potential. But let’s be honest here, we’re all doing the all-hands-on-deck drill because of one man. One hoodie’d, visor-wearing, smirking man who’s surely enjoying every bit of the chaos he’s whipping up.
