GREEN BAY — Jayden Reed was back home on Tuesday, but when the Green Bay Packers wide receiver will be back on the field following the neck injury he suffered in Sunday’s win over the New York Jets is hard to predict. 

Reed was injured on the second offensive snap of the Packers’ 20-17 overtime win over the Jets, twisting awkwardly as he was being tackled by linebacker Demario Davis at the end of a 4-yard catch from quarterback Jordan Love.

He was placed on a backboard and then carted off the field, and while he did regain feeling in all his extremities before leaving MetLife Stadium, he spent the night in the hospital while the Packers’ charter flight returned to Austin Straubel Airport.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said Reed was “in good spirits” immediately following the game when the two men spoke, and that Reed was back in Green Bay on Tuesday “still going through a lot of testing and consulting with doctors. But from what I’m being told, he’s doing OK.”

LaFleur also clarified that the injury was to Reed’s neck, and not to his back, as ESPN reported on Monday.

As for whether Reed could return later in the season or is done for the year, LaFleur replied, “It’s way too early for that right now. There’s a lot going on.”

Reed suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2 last season and underwent surgeries to repair his collarbone and the Jones fracture he’d suffered in his foot during training camp. He wound up missing 10 games before returning to action.

“We’ll see when he gets back in the building what all’s going on,” said quarterback Jordan Love, who traded text messages with Reed but had not seen him as of Tuesday afternoon. “I think the big thing is just everybody is happy to see that he’s doing good, that this isn’t anything that is worse than what the injury is. We’ll see when they get in here and look at it, but I’m just happy he’s doing all right.”

Without Reed, the Packers’ depth chart at wide receiver is made up of Christian Watson, who leads the team in receiving yards (188) and touchdown catches (three) and is tied for the team lead in receptions (10); Matthew Golden, who has 10 catches for 153 yards on 18 targets; Bo Melton, who left Sunday’s game with a stinger but has been estimated as a full participant the last two days; Skyy Moore, the team’s punt and kickoff returner; and J. Michael Sturdivant, who made the roster as an undrafted rookie free agent coming out of camp.

But replacing Reed will be a challenge, LaFleur said.

“He’s a juice guy. And we put a lot on his plate,” LaFleur said. “Certainly not having him available, I think we saw some of the effects of that last season when he came back, and just the complexity it can put into our offense.

“That’s something that we just have to adjust to. [But] I do feel confident that we have some guys capable of fulfilling a lot of the things that he did.”
