ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders avoided the worst-case scenario.
Franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels will not have surgery on his dislocated elbow and avoided a stint on the injured reserve, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
Daniels will be listed as week-to-week, although the exact timeline for his return is still unknown.
Daniels spent the last week seeing specialists and returned to the team facility on Friday morning. Washington held a meeting with Daniels to review the medical assessments and decided he could return this season.
The third-year star was injured in Dallas last Sunday when he tripped over his own lineman’s foot. When he braced his fall with his left arm, his elbow over-extended.
It was the third time in four games Daniels injured his left elbow. He originally dislocated it against the Seahawks in Week 9 last year. After he sat out a few games, he returned in Week 14 against the Vikings but aggravated the injury and sat out the rest of the year.
Quinn said Daniels never discussed having surgery last offseason. He returned to play without wearing a brace.
By avoiding IR, Daniels can return at any time. Washington plays in London against the Colts next Sunday. After that, the Commanders play the Giants at home and the 49ers on the road.
