The New York Jets could have an opening to expand rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq’s workload Sunday against the Detroit Lions, and the thinning depth around him makes that more than a developmental choice. Jets tight end Mason Taylor (thumb) did not practice all week and was ruled out Friday, rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. (ankle) is on injured reserve, and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell (finger) is questionable on the injury report after he was limited Thursday and Friday. The Week 3 game kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on September 27 at Ford Field.
Locked On Jets host John Butchko said Sadiq needs a bigger role after the rookie was managed carefully following an injury-shortened training camp. Sadiq has five catches for 38 yards through two games, but Butchko argued that the first-round pick’s rare speed and size make him a “matchup problem” the offense cannot leave in a limited package.
With Taylor being ruled out Friday, Jeremy Ruckert and Jelani Woods give the offense blocking options, but Butchko’s case is that neither creates the same receiving stress as Sadiq. Andrew Beck is listed as a fullback on the club’s roster, even if he can align with the tight ends.
The Lions enter the matchup 1-1 with an offense averaging 31 points per game, fourth in the NFL through two weeks. Butchko’s argument is that the Jets cannot reasonably expect to trade scoring drives in Detroit, making explosive plays especially valuable. He pointed to Sadiq’s ability to work in space, on screens, and from movement looks as a possible way to produce one without asking quarterback Geno Smith to repeatedly attack a settled defense.
Frank Reich, the Jets’ offensive coordinator, has several ways to build those touches without making Sadiq the entire offense. The rookie’s early production has come in a small sample, but the roster situation gives Reich a reason to test a larger menu of formations and routes. Garrett Wilson remains the primary receiving threat, yet Sadiq could offer the complementary target New York needs if Mitchell is limited.
Sunday will show whether the Jets view Sadiq as a selectively deployed rookie or a player ready for a larger role in an offense that needs more answers around Wilson. With Taylor out, the choice could shape both the passing game and the club’s upset path in Detroit.
