Even Tom Brady is using NFL social media slang.
This reference was used after Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw a poorly timed pick vs. the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
On a 3rd-and-5 from Buffalo’s 18-yard line with a 13-10 lead early in the fourth, Herbert forced a ball toward the end zone.
Veteran defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson read it for the pick and returned it well, setting the stage for Buffalo to go on and win 24-16.
When analyzing the mistake on the FOX broadcast, Brady roasted the 28-year-old quarterback with a sandwich reference.
“There’s a safety in the middle of the field,” Brady started. “Poor awareness, poor decision, throws him a meatball sub.”
Labeling quarterback interceptions and poor throws as a type of sandwich is a growing trend on social media.
If a quarterback’s throw is labeled as such, it’s never a good thing. And now even Brady is getting in on it.
Herbert finished the game throwing for 226 yards, one touchdown and the aforementioned pick on 20 of 34 completions as Josh Allen overcame a tough start to secure the win.
Los Angeles dropped to 0-3 despite positive expectations coming into the season. Its upcoming schedule — at Seattle, vs. Denver, at Kansas City, at LA Rams — provides minimal optimism things will turn around.
