Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cam Sample. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now
The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted veteran edge rusher Cam Sample for a free agent visit to UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Friday, according to the NFL transaction page.
Sample, 27, spent five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2021-25 after joining the Bengals as a fourth-round pick out of Tulane in 2021.Â
His contract with the Bengals expired this March, and he spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons this offseason, but was released. In three preseason games with the Falcons this August, Sample had four tackles, one sack and two quarterback hits.
Sample was immediately a rotational player with the Bengals as a rookie in 2021. He played in 61 games over five years and made five starts, missing the entire 2024 season with a torn Achilles.
He has seven career sacks, eight tackles for loss and 26 quarterback hits, while recording 85 tackles. Sample’s best statistical season was in 2022, when he recorded 25 tackles, two sacks, four tackles for loss and seven quarterback hits.
The Steelers do not have an obvious need at edge rusher, where four players earn significant playing time from the 53-man roster, and Bradyn Swinson and international pathway player Julius Welschof are on the practice squad.
In addition to hosting Sample for a visit, the Steelers also tried out four offensive linemen, two linebackers, a running back and a cornerback on Friday.
