The Miami Dolphins kept the game within reach behind a strong defensive showing but fell to the Minnesota Vikings, 15-10, at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Miami’s defense came out with energy. Defensive lineman Zach Sieler recorded the unit’s first sack of the season on Minnesota’s opening offensive play, bringing quarterback Kyler Murray down for an eight-yard loss at the Vikings’ 40-yard line.

Strong returns from Miles Price gave Minnesota favorable field position early, as consecutive kick returns set the Vikings up at their own 48- and 38-yard lines. Miami’s defense responded with several timely stops to keep the Vikings out of the end zone.

Minnesota moved into scoring range in the opening quarter, but Miami’s defense held strong. Key stops from rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez forced the Vikings to settle for a 47-yard field goal by kicker Will Reichard, giving Minnesota a 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Dolphins continued to generate pressure throughout the first half. Edge Josh Uche recorded Miami’s second sack of the afternoon on third-and-11, forcing a punt. Reichard later connected on a 50-yard field goal to extend Minnesota’s lead.

Sieler continued his standout performance with another drive-stalling sack, and Miami held the Vikings to another field goal as Minnesota took a 9-0 lead into halftime.

On the Dolphins’ first possession of the second half, an explosive 53-yard run from running back Ollie Gordon II moved Miami into field goal range, allowing kicker Riley Patterson to connect from 27 yards and narrow the gap to 9-3.

Minnesota increased its lead to 12-3 on Reichard’s fourth field goal of the day after penalties erased positive gains on the ground. Miami’s defense continued to generate pressure on the next possession, with edge Chop Robinson notching an 11-yard sack to record the Dolphins’ fourth and final takedown of the afternoon.

Miami answered with its first touchdown drive on the next possession. Quarterback Malik Willis connected with wide receiver Malik Washington on consecutive 17-yard completions, and Gordon II added nine yards on the ground before scoring his second touchdown of the season on a 12-yard run. Patterson added the extra point to make it a two-point game at 12-10 in the third quarter.

Minnesota moved into scoring position on the following series, but Miami’s defense kept the Vikings out of the end zone and forced a fifth field goal for the final score of the evening.

Gordon II paced the ground game with 9 carries for 100 yards (11.1 avg.) and a touchdown, while Washington led the receiving corps with 5 catches for 67 yards (13.4 avg.). Rodriguez finished with a team-high 18 tackles (nine solo), the most by any player in a single game this season and the most by a Dolphins rookie since tackles became officially tracked in 1994.

The Dolphins return to Miami Gardens to host the Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) next Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium.
