Going into Week 4, a big chunk of discourse surrounded Brian Schottenheimer’s play calling and late-game decision-making. After the Cowboys’ 34-30 win over the Houston Texans, Stephen Jones reiterated his confidence in Dallas’ head coach.
“Absolutely. He’s got a sneaky rĂ©sumĂ© in terms of having a lot of history in this league,” Jones said Monday. “He grew up around the table with a Hall of Fame type coach, understanding the game of football, understanding the NFL. Certainly, [he] coached under a lot of great coaches in Seattle and New York. He’s had them all, and of course, his father. He’s got a sneaky rĂ©sumĂ©, and that’s why we certainly feel like he can get the job done.
“He’s got a lot of confidence. He’s very authentic. He’s certainly respected, and people — I think the players have a lot of confidence in him. I think his staff has a lot of confidence in him. Going to the other side of it, I know Jerry [Jones], myself and our family and the organization have a lot of confidence in him.”
“When you’ve got confidence to name a guy head coach of your NFL football team, in particular our case, the Cowboys, you want them to know we’ve got confidence,” Jones said. “The biggest thing we talked about last week is, I think it’s pretty much a given that people believe that we’ve got one of the top offenses in the NFL. So let’s have confidence in it. If we’re going to err on that side, then let’s go for it on fourth-and-4 in the red zone. Let’s know that when he’s making those calls — not that that’s what he’s thinking about — that he’s got full support of the organization, of ownership.”
