On Monday’s Good Morning America, New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason opened up about the 20-year anniversary of his blocked punt, now immortalized as a statue, during the now-famed “Domecoming” game after Hurricane Katrina.
With Robin Roberts, Gleason reflected on his remarkable 15-year journey with ALS and his new album, REBIRTH, A Song Cycle.
Gleason has become a symbol of inspiration, often inextricably linked to his ALS diagnosis. But later Monday night, Gleason reminded the world that he’s still the same person he always was — with a wicked sense of humor.
Gleason joined Eli Manning and Peyton Manning for the ManningCast during the Saints’ blowout loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football, and he didn’t waste any time showing off his wit.
“This is my first time I’ve had a live conversation on TV in front of billions and billions people, and I’m super nervous,” Gleason said. “So, I’ll try not to stu-, stu-, stu-, stu-, stu-, stu-, stu-, stutter.”
When asked about his blocked punt, Gleason quipped, “It’s pretty simple, boys. I got to the punter so quickly because the Falcons bleeped it up. Our coaches noticed a weakness in their protection.” Gleason walked through the mechanisms of what happened on the play before adding, “Peyton, I could have been blocking punts for you in Indianapolis if the Colts didn’t cut me.”
Gleason earnestly described what that night was like in the Superdome, noting, “It was so loud, Eli, even louder than Peyton screaming, ‘Omaha!’”

To end, Eli threw to a Peyton’s Places clip of Peyton attempting and failing to punt. He asked Gleason how easy it would have been to block Peyton’s punt. Gleason nailed the dismount by saying, “Peyton, unfortunately for both of us, long before I hit the ball, I’d hit your forehead.”
The Mannings’ admiration for Gleason jumped through the screen throughout their conversation, and they couldn’t help but crack up at his perfectly timed jokes.
The ManningCast has lost steam with audiences this season, but Gleason’s appearance showcased what its upside is supposed to be.
