JACKSONVILLE – He’s one of many, and Brenton Strange likes that.
Strange, a fourth-year tight end, is one of the Jaguars’ best offensive players. That he’s one of their many capable, productive “skill” players is why every NFL Sunday is not like this past Sunday for Strange.
Strange had a career day Sunday, a sign of a deep room of pass-catchers that is emerging as a major reason for the Jaguars’ 3-1 start.
“It just speaks to the playmakers that we have on this team and the coaches, how they call it up every week,” Strange said Monday as the AFC South-leading Jaguars began looking head to a game against the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London Sunday.
Strange, a second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, turned in a career day in the Jaguars’ Week 4 22-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday. He recording a career-best 95 receiving yards on seven receptions, leading the team in receiving after biding his time and being a team-first player.
“I was pleased,” Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said Monday of Strange’s performance against the Bengals. “We definitely felt like with some of their injuries at the safety position, specifically, that we felt Brenton could take advantage of some of those matchups and made some really good plays and caught the ball strong, made some people miss.”
Strange not only caught a lot of passes Sunday, he caught critical ones. His 23-and 14-yard first-quarter receptions set up an early field goal by kicker Cam Little, and his 16-yard reception in the fourth quarter set up a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence following the victory called Strange a “guy [who] just does a lot for our team.”
“He can block in the run game, in the pass game, all that stuff,” Lawrence said. “Then, obviously you see what he can do with the ball in his hands. He’s a matchup. [Sunday] obviously was the most he has been involved this season, but that’s our offense.”
Strange also on Sunday converted several third-down receptions into first downs, including third-and-18 on the first scoring drive of the game.
“They look to exploit certain things as every team does,” Strange said of the Bengals. “We all do a good job of communicating, putting in the work during the week and making it happen.”
